# Compass & GPS vs ElevationCheck

The clearest difference is rating: Compass & GPS at 4.7 against ElevationCheck's 4.2. Compass & GPS also leads on in-app purchases (none vs 1) and ratings volume (13K vs 6). ElevationCheck's advantage is update cadence (every 2 days vs every 9 days) and review sentiment (63% vs 47%). On price, ads, device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. ElevationCheck sells 1 in-app purchase, starting at $3.99 per month. Compass & GPS asks for nothing beyond the download.

Compass & GPS holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.2. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Compass & GPS has 13K ratings behind it against 6, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 47% of Compass & GPS's written reviews are positive against 63% of ElevationCheck's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Compass & GPS ships an update every 9 days, ElevationCheck every 2 days. Both last shipped on October 30, 2026.
