# Thalamus vs Core Step Prep

The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Thalamus at none against Core Step Prep's 6. Thalamus also leads on ratings volume (492 vs 2) and iOS requirement (15.1 vs 26.0). Core Step Prep's advantage is update cadence (every 6 days vs every 3 months) and rating (4.0 vs 3.8). On price, review sentiment, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Core Step Prep sells 6 in-app purchases, starting at $9.99 per 7 days. Thalamus asks for nothing beyond the download.

Core Step Prep holds the better App Store score, 4.0 against 3.8. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Thalamus has 492 ratings behind it against 2, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 6% of Thalamus's written reviews are positive against 0% of Core Step Prep's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Thalamus ships an update every 3 months, Core Step Prep every 6 days. The most recent releases landed on October 24, 2026 and October 30, 2026 respectively.
