# Luminair vs Photon

The clearest difference is monetization model: Photon at free with in-app purchases against Luminair's subscription. Photon also leads on iOS requirement (10 vs 14.0). Luminair's advantage is ratings volume (1.2K vs 27) and update cadence (fortnightly vs every 6 weeks). On price, rating, review sentiment and ads there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Luminair sells 4 in-app purchases, starting at $9.99 per month and Photon sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Luminair holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 4.4. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Luminair has 1.2K ratings behind it against 27, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 36% of Luminair's written reviews are positive against 42% of Photon's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Luminair ships an update fortnightly, Photon every 6 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 16, 2026 and September 17, 2026 respectively.
