# Mr Chess vs Chess Royale

The clearest difference is ads: Mr Chess at none against Chess Royale's shown. Mr Chess also leads on iOS requirement (10.0 vs 15.0). Chess Royale's advantage is ratings volume (20K vs 24) and update cadence (every 5 weeks vs every 6 months). On price, rating, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Mr Chess sells 1 in-app purchase, starting at $0.49 per year and Chess Royale sells 10 in-app purchases, starting at $7.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Mr Chess holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Chess Royale has 20K ratings behind it against 24, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 50% of Mr Chess's written reviews are positive against 60% of Chess Royale's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

Mr Chess ships an update every 6 months, Chess Royale every 5 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 16, 2026 and October 22, 2026 respectively.
