# Onion Browser vs TOR Browser

The clearest difference is monetization model: Onion Browser at freemium against TOR Browser's subscription. TOR Browser's advantage is review sentiment (74% vs 49%) and rating (4.6 vs 4.3). On price, ratings volume, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Onion Browser sells 10 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per 7 days and TOR Browser sells 9 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

TOR Browser holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 4.3. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 13K and 20K respectively. Written reviews point the same way: 49% of Onion Browser's written reviews are positive against 74% of TOR Browser's.

Onion Browser ships an update every 2 months, TOR Browser every 3 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 29, 2026 and October 31, 2026 respectively.
