# Proton Mail vs Ruby

The clearest difference is ratings volume: Proton Mail at 48K against Ruby's 1. Proton Mail also leads on chart position (#59 vs unranked). Ruby's advantage is rating (5.0 vs 4.8) and review sentiment (60% vs 46%). On price, update cadence, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Proton Mail sells 6 in-app purchases, starting at $5.99 per month and Ruby sells 6 in-app purchases, starting at $4.79 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

Ruby holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.8. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Proton Mail has 48K ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 46% of Proton Mail's written reviews are positive against 60% of Ruby's.

Both ship on a similar rhythm, roughly every 10 days. The most recent releases landed on October 13, 2026 and September 30, 2026 respectively.
