  • Love this.

Such a great app for structuring harmonic thoughts, but I also made a killer Gene Krupa style swing groove with this using some of the length and velocity randomness features which I'll never forget.

Only request is to bring it to the iPhone, at least as an AUv3, so I can have compatibility with Cubasis projects I share/send between the devices.

  • Perfect SH-101 Sequencer

It’s like having 4+ Roland SH-101 sequencers on steroids. Everything you love about the 101 sequencer PLUS everything you ever wanted from the 101 sequencer in one tidy little app. And then some. Full on love affair.
  • Thx for the update

Long time user thx for bringing auv3! Lovely sequencer!
  • AUv3! YES!!

    Thank you!
  • Definitely NOT a “toy”!

I have had this app for a few days, and I just can not leave it alone! The title calls it a toy, but it doesn’t feel or behave like one. I have some minor issues with it, but mostly I really like it.

There are lots of possibilities here, especially working with a multi-timbral synth like the Korg iM1 or the bs-16i. It’s extremely flexible, with lots of options for variability. I especially love the ability to randomize the notes, or the velocity, or the note gate length. Being able to do this allows the sequences to sound a lot less mechanical and boring.

The one feature I’m still getting used to is the file saving system; it just doesn’t operate the way you think it does. There’s no option to just save the “set” you’re working on, or at least I can’t find it.

It would also be really nice to have a good assortment of scales to pick from; the app provides only major & minor.

Nevertheless I still give it 5 stars; VERY interesting app.

Updating as of 9/8/2020: latest update allows MidiSTEPs to be used within AU host apps like AUM; this works very well; each instance of MidiSTEPs is one sequencer like the ones in the stand-alone app, and you can use as many as you like...

  • Definitely a toy

The description makes it seem like you can sequence CC messages, but you can't. The only CC info it sequences is velocity. Not being able to sequence CC messages places this firmly in the 'toy' department. Not usable for anything professional.

    Developer Response

Hi, as explained in the user manual, you choose which CCs to sequence by tapping on the name of the parameter in the CC section (eg. “step velocity”, “step length”, “mute probability”) which then allows you to change it to any MIDI CC or AU parameter you would like to step sequence. Velocity, length and mute are the defaults but they can be changed to whatever you like.
  • Awesome step sequencer!

This is the best sequencer out there. I use it everyday in my music creation. It has an easy to use interface and has many many features. Love it!
  • Almost...

The idea is great and the app has a nice, simple look. I bought it to sequence chords on my DeepMind12 and it...almost...works. It crashes after working beautifully for a few moments. I'll stick around for an update because the potential is huge. When working properly it will keep me from purchasing something like the kordbot. I'm hoping the issues get sorted out. Godspeed developers!

  • Great For Non-Keyboardists!

Being a non-keyboardist, I've always liked step sequencers. I use a few, but all lack certain features that leave them incomplete. Art Kerns has done a tremendous job in collecting those features under one roof with midiSTEPS!

It's incredibly easy to use, (even for a guy who's never been a MIDI fan.) The workflow is a breeze. I had a couple of small problems, but a soft-reset saw to 'em. (And, the manual is excellent.)

I suspect there's a fair number of people, like me, who'd rather be moving along in making music instead of agonizingly pecking out keyboard parts. MidiSTEPS is just the ticket out of that mess!

  • Crashes immediately

Nothing else open, this app crashed after ten seconds. Current iOS. Might ask for refund.
