So good

Hope they continue to keep it up to date. Only good option I reply have for a proper drum machine I can run AUV3. This one is a keeper!

Excellent Drum Machine

There are an abundance of iOS drum apps and most of them don’t sound great and are not musically intuitive to play. Vatanator does both very very well in a unique and functional way.

In my live set up I am running both hardware and iOS so the sounds have to match it with the external gear (using Elektron Rytm MKII as primary drum machine). Within 15 minutes of downloading Vatanator I was able to program great sounding patterns and loops, synced via midi clock to my Ableton live set project. I will eventually import my own samples to use, only after I have gone through all the great kits in the library that come with it.

The user interface is exactly what an iOS drum app should be. Simple. This is not easy to achieve and for me is the difference between an app that gets used and an app that doesn’t. You could put a 0 onto the end of the USD8 price tag and I still would have no hesitation buying it and paying for updates. Well done and keep up the excellent work.

Raw goodness

UPDATE: the beauty of this app is its sound. To me it has the sound of vintage drum machines. Musty, dusty and full of character in many ways but it can also be very intense. I use it for what it does, which is sound and feel awesome! Get their other apps too. They’re great!

This is one funky drum machine in so many ways. My favorite.

Pretty Good

Some apps are great for most people. Some are good for specific situations. Some are very flexible and work for most people for many things. This drum app is ok but for me it’s short of 5 stars.

Not what I was expecting

It didn’t have the drum machine samples I was hoping for, and the sample import process is convoluted. Buy it if you want a large assortment of crusty, cheesy, premade drum kits.

Too limited and too many problems

This is the downside with IOS apps. They’re cost-effective but you really have no idea what you’re getting for your situation, you can only go off the impressions of others and the idealised presentations of the makers.

So: no metronome; you have to work in versions of 4/4 (At least waltz and 6/8 would have been useful); you can only work with 16 or 32 steps; the adsr appears to have edit handles but only a couple of them work; the song mode is limited - you basically have a limit of 32 bars, at least I couldn’t find any way to lengthen a piece; I had a piece that I had saved changed (different configuration of patterns in the song interface, ring mod setting not saved) when I reopened it - I don’t trust this software; effects are global rather than per pad.

I was frustrated by this app at almost every turn. It may be cheap and have lots of kits but it’s a toy. I hope it improves.

Now I’m off to find something more robust.

Auv3 needs some attention.

I really want to like this drum machine, the drums supplied are really nice and lofi but the import of samples is frustrating, but given the nature of iOS I can work that. What is more frustrating is the auv3 crashes when trying to manipulate drum samples. In auv3 samples can’t be pitch shifted, reversed or stretched and there’s no simple EQ for low or hi cuts and boosts. The fx are global and need to be per pad, or it there needs an fx channel to route to. Sample start and end points would be helpful and useful in real-time as would stretch, reverse and repeats. It’s early days for the app so hopefully some of the auv3 issues can be addressed before adding more to it.

Meh

I was pretty excited to use this cool little drum box. It’s got some sweet features, MIDI learn, and a ton of presets but...it just doesn’t sound very good. The volume is weird, low, almost muffled - even on imported samples. It just doesn’t sit well in the mix. I can maybe see it as a 2nd kit to add a little color to a beat. Also, as far as I can tell it has NO CHOKE GROUPS.

Great app but

Needs some in app kits
Options for more affects side chain would be great
Kits sound a bit thin could benefit with an update or outsource for an in app purchase
