Reviews of FireBoard®

  • Good hardware, frustrating app

I’ve been using a Fireboard for several years. I trust the probes to be accurate and use them instead of the ones my RT-680 provides. But this app is frustrating. I like the graphs and being able to inspect them so that I can judge the remaining time on a cook, but that’s about it for the good parts. First, it can only record in 24 hour intervals. I have smoked many Boston Butts that exceed 24 hours, and the break makes it difficult to see the whole cook in context. Second, and this is the one that has me writing this review today, IT WILL FORGET ALL CHANNEL LABELS AND ALERTS on a regular basis. So if you’ve configured your channels for common cooks, and you don’t inspect the configuration with each cook, you’ll probably end up overcooking because everything you’ve configured has been lost.

I wish they would open source the backend so I could run my own local instance. At some point I’m going to get frustrated enough to reverse engineer it and write my own so that I can fix these absurd annoyances.
  • Great overall, but…

Overall the FireBoard is great and the accompanying app is better than ok, but can be better. First off, I must say I prefer the original FireBoard over the FireBoard 2, I actually returned my 2 and will wait to buy it again if/when my original dies. That has no affect on my review of the app though.
The iOS app has pretty much everything it needs, except it’s missing one thing that seems to be a major thing to me. It NEEDS iOS widgets and/or an Apple Watch complication! I mean I still have an iGrill from before Weber bought it, and it has an iOS widget, and it’s only Bluetooth and not WiFi. The whole point is to be handy, but to open and unlock phone or watch, then open app or bring app to the front just for a quick glance at a temp isn’t so stellar, widgets would make it better.
  • Good app and hardware

Coming from a BBQ Guru this is so much better! The hardware is stable and works very well for both Bluetooth and WiFi.

The app is stable and has a lot of features. My only complaint is parts of the UI are a bit too busy and they should make data entry easier for some things. But it’s solid.
