Description of Rocks N Diamonds

Rocks'N'Diamonds for iOS. This is a port of the PC/Mac/Unix game of Rocks'N'Diamonds. Rocks'N'Diamonds is a game that includes the ability to play many levels from classic games like Emerald Mine (Amiga), Boulderdash (C64), Sokoban and Supaplex. In Emerald Mine, the player must collect a minimum count of gems in a labyrinth and reach the then-opened gate. Gems, stones, bombs and acid are subject to a vertical gravitation. Furthermore, elements exist which guide the movement of the player like different wall types, and a number of enemies, some of which seek out the player. There are also further elements, like the dynamite which may be exploded at a chosen place, and the doors, for whose passing the matching key must be collected. Solving a level grants access to the next one, and there is a separate highscore list for each level. Level sets included in this version: Classic Emerald Mine 1, 2 and 3 Classic Boulderdash Classic Sokoban Classic Supaplex

Reviews of Rocks N Diamonds

  • Boulderdash (sort of)

I loved Boulderdash when I was a child (80s) and I found this app in the store which includes the original Boulderdash levels. This was a surprise given that the Boulderdash copyright is still vigorously defended. I’m using the Dual Shock 4 controller and it works pretty well (nothing beats an old Atari-style joystick though!). The Boulderdash levels seem to be faithful copies but they’re presented as individual challenges so it’s not the equivalent of playing a coherent game. The graphics are crap, the wonderful Boulderdash theme tune is missing, the sound effects are truly awful but, hey, being able to play the classic Cave M on my iPad is pretty good!
  • Keyboard does not work, awful controls

Unlike in Emerald Mine, in RnD the keyboards does not show up when trying to write envelope/change level name. iOS 11.2.1 iPad 4. I wish there was virtual joystick, controls are awful. Please fix, otherwise absolutely amazing game. Better than many games today!
  • Good port of classic game

Used to play on PC, this app is pretty good port. Took a while to figure out controls. Set touch control to follow finger. That works ok for movement. Then hold finger on figure to drop dynamite. Hold and swipe one square to grab without moving. Use sound to help detect when dynamite fuse is lit.

Beginners will die a lot in dumb ways. Experts will die alot in slightly smarter ways.
