  • Not my thing.

This app only teaches you how to spell the words with the letters. I want an app that teaches me the words, not letters.
  • ASL Fingerspell Dictionary

I became severely deaf in the last five years. I have been learning ASL with a tutor during the last year. I find receptive fingerspelling one of the harder aspects of learning to communicate in ASL. The ASL Fingerspell Dictionary is very helpful in this regard and fills a need not available otherwise . The displays are clear. The pace of presentation very adequate. The progression of difficulty well chosen. And to top it all, after finding a bug in the application and contacting Tech Support I received a reply within two hours acknowledging the problem and promising a prompt fix. Two days later I received an email alerting me that an update was available in the App Store. Installed and working!!!

  • Certain signs are not correct.

I’ve only recently started using this app and I’ve noticed the the person does not sign the letter W in the word Week. I’ve replayed it several times and Fingerspelled along with her. She spells eek. I guest and added the letter M to spell meek, and got it wrong. If this app was free that would be no big deal. But I expect 0 flaws and errors from an app that I paid money for. Doesn’t matter how small the amount is I still paid for it.

They are correct, please go to the word "Week" you spoke about in the LEARN option and you can clearly see the W as the starting position. We worked very hard to make this app correct and to help people, if there was a mistake we would fix it immediately, however this word looks correct. Thank you for your feedback.
  • Hard to make out the letters

I agree with the other reviews- the woman doing the finger spelling is terrible. It’s like trying to learn a language from someone who mumbles with a heavy accent.
Not good for beginners at all.
I can’t believe that why she signs the E, with her hand turned to herself so you can barely see it.
It’s frustrating, and not in a good way.

We tried to create a realistic and natural design how people sign complete words in conversation, yes letters blend together without a pause. Everyone fingerspells differently, learning to recognize different peoples fingerspelling can be difficult. Beginners may choose to start with pictures of single letters. Designed to challenge you, we include levels, quizzes, multiple choice and harder typing your answer. We hope you enjoy the app and it helps you learn and communicate. Thank you for your support.
  • Landscape mode please

I want to be able to use landscape mode for typing the answer, why? Because I have a Smart Keyboard and its easier to type with that than portrate.

    Developer Response

We can try to add landscape for the "Type Answer Quiz" It will work fine for iPad but for an iPhone user their is not enough room on the screen for the keyboard and to display the videos and other items, but we will work on some ideas. Thank you for your feedback and support.

  • Wanna-be-interpreter

This is a great app! Still needing practice “reading” asl, this app does a great job. I mostly use the Learn feature and set it to play-all. True the app only goes uo to 5-letter words but it’s a great start. I highly recommend this app to all non-expert signers!!

    Developer Response

Thank you. We're glad you like the app and the 'Play All" feature which lets you play through all 1000 fingerspelled words seamlessly. Thank you for your feedback and support.
  • Hand position

-At times it’s very difficult to make out some letters as she doesn’t have good positioning of her hand facing the receiver (us using the app)
-Also with the poor positioning of her hand... when she blends letters halfway (which is common in FSing)... you can’t make out what letter it is, even in slow motion because of the bad positioning of her hand. You have to guess or fill in the blank.
-adding more words / higher letter count words would be awesome. And please have the signer face her hand out front, not inward to herself. That’s so weird, even with beginners all the way to full on Deaf people and instructors, never have I see someone fingerspell inward.
-3 stars because of her hand positioning. Otherwise this would be a great app.
-maybe make a 2nd version (I would pay) or add on this one for higher count words + add numbers. Something like the price of an item, years, age of a person, would be good for number practice.

  • Read what is app offers

I only read the reviews and decided to purchase based on that. The app it self is good. The app offers and does everything it says it will do. Since I did not read it fully I didn’t see that it only goes up to 5 letter words. This is app seems more for beginners or those still in ASL classes. I went through the levels very fast. I’m currently an interpreting student. I still have trouble with finger spelling. The app however is not comprehensive enough for my level. I need more than 5 letters words. Also the speed is good but I wish it could be made faster. In my experience I often come across a lot of deaf who Fingerspell faster than what is provided in the video. Hopefully the developer can add more levels that include larger words. 6+ letter. Also provide an option to make the speed faster, not only slower..... After using the app more. I would still buy it knowing what it is. it is really good practice. Also I think I may have misspoke saying this app was not comprehensive enough. At its current level it is still a challenge. Long term In order to remain a challenge i believe more words should be added. Either new words 3-5 letters. Or expanding to longer words.

Thank you. We're glad you like the app and its helping you. Its easy for you but hard for others. Thank you for the suggestions, yes we can add longer words the next time we film and make a fast mode advanced users. Thank you for your support.
  • Good practice, but...

The signer finger-spells with her hand near her bellybutton and her hand facing away from the camera. It’s not very clear, but is good practice for real life conversation between multiple people as you’re not always going to have the person fingerspelling facing you.

    Developer Response

Thank you. I also wish people would fingerspell clearly facing me, but you are right, real life conversation is different than pictures in a book. We designed this app to be natural and realistic to challenge you and help you practice. We hope you enjoyed the app, thank you for your feedback and support.
