TL;DR Fraudulent charge investigation is lazy and support won’t transfer you to anyone who will talk about it.
I’ve been using Bento for over 3 years and up until recently had nothing but good things to say about it. That is until one of our cards was compromised and I filed a dispute, things went downhill very fast.
Because we fund our account and don’t use the credit option, the stolen funds came out of our checking account. I filed the dispute the next day, and waited…
I received a response 11 days later stating that the disputed purchases would not be refunded:
“For the disputed transaction(s), listed in the table above, we did not find any error based on our investigation. Therefore, no funds will be credited to your account as a result of your claim and this matter is considered closed.
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS.
We have determined that
The disputed transaction(s) was/were authenticated with CHIP, indicating your card was physically used to perform these disputed transactions (Authenticated via CHIP)”
Now the interesting part is the purchases were made in Texas (all at Targets around Austin) and I’m in Georgia. The card never left the possession of my employee (he clocked in that day, we saw him work and he made local purchases. CC fraud using stolen numbers have been around a long time, but replicated CHIP cards is a new one. We immediately reissued the card and I placed it on my desk, yet there were 6 additional charges made at Targets around Austin (all declined of course) using the same card details, and presumably “authenticated via CHIP”.
I called and complained and was told basically, too bad so sad. The offshore support personnel will not transfer you to anyone who will speak with you about the dispute, you get stiff armed at every turn. After 5 calls, I finally got them to reopen the case and was told it could take 90 days… $2400 gone and they don’t care.
The app is great, but given the level of credit card fraud we’re seeing, this service isn’t worth it. Don’t bother with Bento, there are better options.
