Have a bunch of .mkv and .mp4 HD movies on a NAS. Been using XBMC/Kodi for years on firetv and couldn’t find any good app on Apple TV so always had to use firetv to stream from my nas. I tried VLC on Apple TV but it would NOT play in 5.1 surround. Elmedia Player fixed that.All my files play and in 5.1 surround. I am very happy with this app. And it’s free.
