2.5

October 13, 2022

FilmLab 2.5 is a major update. Changes in this release include: - A new camera screen that lets you set up a crop to match your desired film format - Two new crop modes available in the image editor - crop and corners/perspective - Improved auto exposure and auto color balance - Export as 8-bit or 16-bit TIFF - Many bug fixes and optimizations In addition, this release updates our subscription model. Features that formerly required a FilmLab Pro upgrade are now included for everyone. FilmLab now requires a subscription to scan new images after the first 12. A subscription is not required to view and edit previously captured images. Users who purchased FilmLab as a one-time lifetime purchase do not need to buy a subscription. When you first install version 2.5, you may need to press the "restore purchases" button to active previous purchases. Thank you very much for your support, which makes it possible for us to continue to develop and improve FilmLab!

Description of FilmLab

FilmLab is the best app for viewing and digitizing film negatives. FilmLab lets you view negatives as positives, capture scans to save and share, and convert high resolution images from scanners and digital cameras. FIlmLab is actively developed by a small team that is passionate about film photography. We believe every film image is special, and we feel a responsibility to help you get the best possible results using the equipment you have available. With that goal in mind, we've invested years of research and development to create an app that does film scanning right. FilmLab supports scanning color negatives, black and white negatives, and color positives (slides). It supports all film formats, including 35mm, medium format, and large format. It works with a wide variety of film scanning setups (including kits sold by Negative Supply, Valoi, pixl-latr, Lomography, and Kodak). FilmLab also supports importing scans in most image formats, including camera raw files. FILMLAB SUBSCRIPTIONS When you install FilmLab, you'll get 12 scans per device for free. To get unlimited scanning, choose a monthly or annual subscription. If you choose to purchase a subscription, your payment will be charged to your Apple account. Subscriptions will automatically renew unless cancelled within 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can turn off auto-renewal at any time by going to your Account Settings in the App Store after purchase. If you cancel your subscription, you will continue to be able to view and edit all the images you scanned while your subscription was active. • Decent but missing major features

Does a decent job with black-and-white negatives. But it’s missing some major features, including the ability to select a bunch of scans and upload them at one time rather than individually.

Also, I don’t see why cannot have manually adjustable exposure.

Even better would be if it used the HDR feature on the camera to capture a wide dynamic range so negatives are a slightly under exposed and slightly overexposed all capture perfectly and separated out.
Add all these features and it’s worth $25.

  • Quite good, could use a few more features 🎞️

Great for editing film scans :)
Bring along a good light box / scanning method and you’ll be good. Some more settings would be great: sharpening is a must for complete scans.
Having a way to save a preset bunch of settings to batch apply would be great also for roll consistency. This applies to the Mac desktop version also!
    Thanks!

  • Cannot believe anyone would pay for this

Very few options for colour correction. I really doubt you could get decent results out of this app.
