First printed by the King's Printer Robert Barker, this was the third translation into English to be approved by the English Church authorities. The first was the Great Bible commissioned in the reign of King Henry VIII, and the second was the Bishops' Bible of 1568. In January 1604, King James I convened the Hampton Court Conference where a new English version was conceived in response to the perceived problems of the earlier translations as detected by the Puritans, a faction within the Church of England. James gave the translators instructions intended to guarantee that the new version would conform to the ecclesiology and reflect the episcopal structure of the Church of England and its belief in an ordained clergy. The translation was done by 47 scholars, all of whom were members of the Church of England. In common with most other translations of the period, the New Testament was translated from Greek, the Old Testament was translated from Hebrew text, while the Apocrypha were translated from the Greek and Latin. In the Book of Common Prayer (1662), the text of the Authorized Version replaced the text of the Great Bible – for Epistle and Gospel readings – and as such was authorized by Act of Parliament. By the first half of the 18th century, the Authorized Version was effectively unchallenged as the English translation used in Anglican and Protestant churches. Over the course of the 18th century, the Authorized Version supplanted the Latin Vulgate as the standard version of scripture for English speaking scholars. Today, the most used edition of the King James Bible, and often identified as plainly the King James Version, especially in the United States, closely follows the standard text of 1769, edited by Benjamin Blayney at Oxford.

  • Wonderful app one suggestion

Please allow phrase search. Two or three words after one another, not just individual words. System till find individual words in whatever verses they appear. For example searching for the phrase “thou shalt not” will find all verses with the word “Thou”. And separately all the verses with the word “shall”, then separately all the verses with the word “not”. It will also find all the verses with any combination of any two or all three words. I have tried quoting the phrase, with no change in the results. Thanks for listening…

  • A review for this Bible app

I do have another Bible app and I do enjoy that one actually more however it is the NIV and more has come to light about how much that has changed how they’ve taken out names and a lot of different things throughout and that’s only going to get worse as now China owns the NIV Bible shame on whoever sold that to them.

What I do like about the NIV Bible app is that I can have it read to me and scroll and those are separate things so I can do either or both. I can choose the voice also.

I love the king James Bible, as that was my first Bible. I would love to have both the King James and the new King James Bibles. But until then I love listening to the Bible and many times taking notes as I listen. I have tried to find your speech app and don’t find it and I don’t find a scroll in your app.

I also want to say that my eyesight has taken a hit what and to have it read to me is so much easier for me.

    Thank you for your time

This app is so versatile in the ability to use scripture in other formats from the King James Bible. I enjoy the devotions from Spurgeon: always timely, always a blessing! Thank you for developing a Bible app that is quick reference look up as well as easily shared with others! This makes my day better!
