Versatile Otter

Although meant for business people, this was found for me by a friend as possibly useful because I am profoundly deaf. I tried it and found it transformed my life. It has made things possible I was on the point of giving up, like committee meetings, group discussions, following conversations at lunch/dinner parties,attending adult education classes, even telephone calls!. I have passed it on to several others with my problem. I get some odd results when the terminology is rather specialised, such as in church services, but this is a small price to pay for the overall benefits.
However, although normally I don’t use anything like my full allowance of minutes, there are occasions when I am very close to running out: these may be when I am on a long course of some days, or when I am in hospital and need to stay in fairly constant contact with a variety of people. There seems no easy way to solve this problem and I do feel that it should be possible to carry forward some of the many minutes from previous months that I have not used.

works but slow and limited

Does what it says it does but….
Free limits enough to get me to buy the pro version which gives 1200 minutes of transcription per month but you only get 10 file uploads a month. I now have to wait another 17 freaking days to upload another file. I only used 429 minutes this month. I will find alternative solution as I’m not paying for a business plan. Feel ripped off and disappointed.

Dealbreaker privacy policy

It works practically flawlessly. But if you read the Eula, Otter trains their tech with your voice recordings. As a creative, this jeopardises the confidentiality of my work.

I prefer on-device alternatives which are, admittedly, leagues behind Otter’s transcribing performance, but also offer total privacy.

In a perfect world, Apple Intelligence will someday match Otter’s level of live transcription and we can get all the goods, all the privacy and none of the exorbitant subscription fees to boot.

Hello! Otter uses a proprietary method to de-identify user data before training our models so that an individual user cannot be identified. You have control over who you share your transcripts or recordings with. Otter requires explicit consent from the customer prior to Otter employees and customer support team accessing your transcript and/or audio recording to troubleshoot a product issue. Before audio recordings are ever reviewed manually by a human (Otter personnel or its third parties), we require explicit consent from customers. Be very careful with this company

I started using this app in July 2021. In 2022 I signed up for a yearly membership instead of the monthly pro subscription. At this time, my membership included 6000 minutes and up to 4 hours of recording in a single session. In my latest yearly renewal last month, I was downgraded to 1200 minutes and 90 minutes of recording in a single session. I wrote into support who has been extremely unhelpful, and they told me it’s all in the faq and in order to have what I had for the last few years I needed to upgrade and pay double what I’m paying to have a business account. I am only about a week and a half into my current month and already at my limit and cannot use the service anymore for the remaining 16 days. Additionally, there is no way to contact a person over the phone. You can only email back-and-forth with one single individual regardless of how many tickets you put in and it takes days to hear back after replying immediately. Additionally, my yearly service is costing more than advertised on the website. things were great until they weren’t great and seeing how they treat customers, especially ones that have been around for a few years is terrible. According to all the other reviews, I am seeing this is common, across-the-board, and lots of people are upset.

Love this app

I love love love this app and use it every day. I only gave it four stars because I have yet to receive a transcript without multiple errors. That said, I appreciate the challenge of 100% correctness so I look forward to future updates. One thing I would say to the developer: If you ask customers later into their journey if you will let them read their files to aid correctness, more will say, yes. I would have. And I’d be happy to do that now, if you tell me how. Have a great day!

Love this app!

I love this app y’all! I am a minister, a psychological practitioner, a writer and a black person who loves expression! Ideas spring forth in my mind with uncanny speed and regularity. Picking up the pen and finding one of my notebooks to capture these little gems is not always an option. But my phone is always close by and I can capture so much more with otter than on paper—especially having come from an oral tradition. I have written sermons, autobiographical stories and sketches, and catalogued many ideas for further consideration. Oh! And I also host early morning meditation sessions in which I speak for 1-10 minutes before we go into silence. I record these sessions and they are a treasure trove of insights, questions, and explorations. For some reason, like with today’s meditation session, the transcript contained an unusually high number of errors. While that doesn’t make me happy, it does not detract significantly from my experience of the app. I have and will continue to recommend Otter to anyone who needs a note taking system or who wants to capture their ideas, etc.

I have but one problem with the app. Sharing my recordings. I wish it were easier and not necessary for folks to have the app to access shared recordings/notes.

Don’t like it

Maybe it’s my New Zealand accent, but for me the transcription was very poor. Both the Word app and Just Press Record were much more accurate. I got gibberish. Then i looked at the permissions! Yikes. Not a fan
