The Mayday Safety app allows users to send and receive emergency alerts to and from those nearby and family members world-wide. As long as there is a cell-phone signal or internet connection, the precise location of the alert and contact information can be shared.
Mayday Safety was designed by, and with the input of, U.S. Special Operations veterans who recognized that some of today’s emergencies resemble more of what is seen on the battlefield than what civilians are used to encountering.
This app is an attempt to bring tools and technology used to track events on the battlefield and put it in the hands of parents, teachers, and individuals looking for a clear method to communicate.
Unfortunately, emergency responders may not know your precise location. Despite what movies show, 911 can often only get a rough area of your location.
There are many stories in the news of people dying because first responders could not find their precise location. According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), up to 10,000 lives a year could be saved in America if better emergency location information could be shared.
Also, those nearby you, your family members, and members of your organization (workplace, school, church, etc.) may be in the best position to get help faster.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the average school shooting lasts 12.5 minutes while the average police response time is 18 minutes.
Emergencies can bring chaos and confusion. The Mayday Safety app allows for simple and effective communication during emergencies.
Other solutions only send out a one-way alert or work with only one organization. The Mayday Safety app allows for feedback and messaging and can be used with as many organizations as a user chooses.
**Use Examples**
FLORIDA SCHOOL SHOOTING
Students took to social media to try and communicate while teachers were confused about what was happening and what to do.
With the Mayday Safety app, everyone with the app could have been immediately alerted to lock-down and the school could have sent communications directly to teachers and staff what to do.
And unlike with other methods of alerting to problems (fire alarms, PA systems, texts, etc.), clear feedback can be received by organizations which can then see on a map who is safe and who needs help.
ASSAULT
Victims of assault may not know their exact location when an assault occurs and may not be able to make a phone call.
By using the Mayday Safety app, victims can immediately alert those nearby and their family members that help is needed and exactly where they are.
FAMILIES
Parents can easily send a “safety check” from the app which will send a notification to their children’s phones. Later, when the child checks in safe, a notification appears on the parents phone.
Also, children may ignore texts or calls. A parent can send out a family-only alert to set off an alarm on everyone’s phone.
Spouses can also know when they need to check their phone during a meeting because it’s an emergency versus ignoring a text to check later.
The Mayday Safety app gives users the ability to manage their safety by crowdsourcing alerts and communication.
