*** Introducing the Active Timer! *** - In the Neutral Density Filter Calculator for Apple Watch, with Active Timer, now timers up to one hour, can provide audible and haptic taps as an aid to the timer status, even when the watch face turns off. Active Timer will also automatically engage from 60 minutes, even for longer exposures. - An Audible Tap (a ding and a haptic tap) plays every ten seconds from 60 to 5 minutes. It plays every 5 seconds from 3 to 1 minute, then every 3 seconds from 60 to 10 seconds. From 10 to 4 seconds it plays every other second, then every second for the last three seconds before the alarm starts to remind you to stop your exposure. - Mute your Apple Watch if you don’t want the sound, but the Audible Tap option makes the taps heavier, and harder to miss. With Audible Taps turned off and just the Active Timer, you’ll get lighter taps during the countdown with no sound. - Photographer’s Friend can now be completely closed during an ND Filter Calculator timer on both the Apple Watch and iOS device, and it will review the timer when opened again. If the app remains closed, you’ll still get a notification to remind you to stop your exposure. - We also added synching of ND Filter Calculator shutter speed and selected ND Filters from the iPhone to Apple Watch when tapping the watch button. - There is now a Decimal Fractions field in the ND Filter Calculator for Apple Watch to cater for filters such as an ND400 which is rated at 8.6 stops. The fractions for stacked filter combinations on the iPhone are also synchronized with the Watch Extension. - Turn on auto-hide to remove the Decimal Fractions field when there is no fraction in the synched filters. When hidden, swipe up to show the Decimal Fractions field to manual input filter fractions. In addition to the above changes, the Settings, Help & Links Tables now flash the scroll bar when selected to make it more obvious that there is more to see when scrolled. - In version 3.6.1 we fixed an issue that caused the hyperfocal distance values at the top of the DoF Calculator to be trailing by one selection when the hyperfocal distance lock was engaged. *** Other Recent Changes *** Version 3.5 was a huge update adding Apple Watch Extensions for the DoF Calculator and ND Filter Calculator which are enabled via an In-App Purchase. Completely reworked the User Interface, making it generally prettier with better resizing of fonts for larger screens (iPad and Silicon Mac). There are also now two different backgrounds available for both Light and Dark appearances, all based on sunrises and dawn light. As part of the Pro Add-on, you can now customize up to eight color schemes, including gradation point, and save them for switching later. The main traffic light colors and highlight colors used throughout Photographer's Friend are also now editable.

Description of Photographer's Friend

Photographer's Friend has three excellent photography calculators in one application, and now with two of them available for Apple Watch with almost full feature parity! We believe our Depth of Field Calculator with the Pixel Peeper mode turned on is the most accurate and detailed DOF Calculator available! Depth-of-Field Calculator ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Calculate the Depth of Field in your photographs based on your camera's sensor size, aperture, focal length, and focus distance, set with four dials along the base of the DoF Calc. The display includes your Hyperfocal Distance, which can be temporarily transferred to the Focus Distance dial or locked for continuous updates. Display distances in metric units or feet and inches. By default, we use traditional Depth of Field calculations, but Pixel Peeper mode calculates Depth of Field using your sensor size and megapixels for higher accuracy. You can also enter a custom Circle of Confusion size if you prefer. There's even a diffraction warning mode! Diffraction Limit guides adjust the color of the Aperture guide when there is a possibility of Diffraction. You can change the Diffraction Limit guide starting points as part of the Pro Add-on available as an In-App purchase. Neutral Density Filter Calculator ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Enter your base shutter speed into the Neutral Density Filter Calculator to calculate your new shutter speed after fitting ND filters to your lens. Filter labels include the multiplication factor (ND2, ND4, etc.) with f-stop and optical density values also displayed. You can hide filters that you don't use or bring them back again with slide gestures. A timer is available for shutter speeds of 3 seconds or longer, so if you don't have a timer switch or built-in timer in your camera, we'll time your exposure for you! Exposure Shift Calculator ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When changing your camera's exposure settings, it's not always obvious which settings to change to counter adjustments you make. When you adjust your aperture from f/5.6 to f/11, does your shutter speed need to go up or down? How does it affect your ISO? The Exposure Shift Calculator has the answers! Enter your current camera settings with the Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO dials, and watch Photographer's Friend calculate how changes to one dial affect the others. You can lock any of the three dials to calculate the other free dial automatically, or turn on Exposure Value Lock to have Photographer's Friend calculate all settings for you! Additional Features as In-App Purchases ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Photographer's Friend is fully functional at the marked price. However, several features such as Apple Watch Extensions and some Pro features available as In-App Purchase as they may not be of interest to everyone. There is also a bundle to save on the multiple individual Add-ons. Links ~~~~ We've included links to in-depth articles on Hyperfocal Distance, Understanding Neutral Density Filters and Circle of Confusion, the Airy Disk and Diffraction, and Understanding Exposure Value, among other helpful content. We've also provided a link to online tutorial videos to walk you through each calculator and the optional Apple Watch Extensions. There are links to email us directly or use our web contact form to ask general photography questions or send questions or suggestions for the app. We think we have all bases covered, but for example, if you own a Neutral Density filter that is not listed, let us know, and we'll add it in a future update. Onboarding Help ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Depth of Field, Neutral Density, Exposure Shift Calculators, and some settings screens have onboarding help with interface element highlighting to help you get to know your new Photographer's Friend. Whether you are just getting started or a seasoned professional photographer or educator, we think you'll find Photographer's Friend invaluable!

Reviews of Photographer's Friend

  • Superb App

Calculating DoF is one thing, but this goes beyond that. The Pixel Peeper mode constrains the DoF to even tighter tolerances. Awesome when trying to REALLY nail focus. It enables sensor MP adjustment to fine tune the calculation.

For example, with my 30MP body and an 85mm lens…shooting at f/1.8 @ 15ft, the DoF is 5.40”, but that same lens on my 50MP body yields just 4.18.” Versus a DoF of 11.68 as a generic “35mm” calculation. There’s “acceptable” focus and then there’s actually sharp focus. It can make a huge difference when printing large.

The included ND Filter Calculator is also very handy. Start with a base shutter speed, tap the ND filter (or several) and the new shutter speed is instantly calculated. It even includes a timer for those that don’t have, or don’t want to use, an intervalometer. Slick
  • One of the best photo apps!!!!!

Fabulous App. The only app I have found that allows me to calculate depth of field when working in the realm of macro. Thanks Martin.
