Great for economically and efficiently managing trees.

I have been using Arboreal Forest for over a year now in my HOA Landscape Committee tasks. We manage about 1600 trees in our urban green spaces. With this app, I have been mapping and measuring large numbers of trees in about 30 seconds per tree and then downloading that list into spread sheets to use for inventory updates and creating tree maintenance work orders. It has helped us immensely in our efforts to manage an urban forest on a limited budget.

Johan, the author of this excellent app, has been very helpful with advice, bug fixes, and feature requests. I highly recommend this app as a great tool for arborists and anyone else that need to manage tree maintenance.

Excellent tool for urban forest management

Our HOA landscape committee uses this for efficient tree measurements. I average less than 30 seconds per tree to gather all pertinent measurements. I then download this data to a spreadsheet for updating inventories, creating work orders, and creating Google Maps overlays. I have been using this app for about a year now on an iPhone 13 and it is now a key tool in our urban forest management program.

simply doesn’t work

just keeps saying ‘turn phone upward’, then ‘aim at tree’, then ‘turn phone downward’ no matter how close or far i get from the tree.

to the developer: yes, i know. that button never becomes enabled for me. it remains disabled no matter what i do.

Response from developer

Thanks for the feedback. When it say aim at tree you should press the button. Then it should work. Good luck with your measurement.

Accurate and Easy to Use

I had to measure a huge Eastern White Pine and started with my Suunto clinometer and a 100 foot tape and took 3 different readings from different locations. Then I tried the app and carefully followed the easy directions and took another three readings. All of these readings were within 1 percent of each other and within 1 percent of my clinometer reading. The height was 140.2 feet using three readings from each of the two methods. I am a retired forester and familiar with tree measurements.
A couple of tips. You need to be able to see the very top of the tree and the base of the tree. You need to go out a hundred feet. You can zoom on your phone to get the crosshairs on the top and base of the tree. Don’t drink coffee before trying to take precise measurements or if you do put the phone on a tripod, but only for high accuracy. Newer phones have Lidar and that technology is getting better all the time.
Great app and this New Hampshire forester won’t be hauling around a 100 foot loggers tape anymore.

Cannot understand why some scored it low!

Nearly didn’t download this app due to some negative reviews. But I did and it is brilliant. I read the instructions on how to use it before I did my first measurement. I then did the 5 free measurements for 5 different trees and compared the results with the Suunto Clinometer and tape measure method. Results were very close matches with less than 5% individual variance and only 0.5% if taken overall. This is well within the error variance found in other studies on tree height measurements.
Just as accurate and much easier to use. I will definitely be paying for additional usage.
And of course, you only really know if such measurements are accurate if you climb or fell the tree!

Thanks for testing the app and I agree that the only way to know is to fell the tree. The Suunto clinometer is not the truth, but should be close to the truth.

Inconsistent Results

I had this app prescribed for a college course and unfortunately I had some pretty poor results when I compared them with a survey. I also was unsuccessful in getting any tree diameters. I was using iPhone 13 Pro, the mobile reception is poor and the trees extremely large. I really hoped this would work better. Very happy to give more detailed feedback.

Response from developer

Thanks for the feedback. At the moment it is hard to measure the diameter of large trees (diameters larger than 1.5 meters) You could also take a look at the videos on youtube to understand how you will get best results. Please send more detailed feedback to support@arboreal.se

Rubbish

A very bad app very laggy i would rather climb up a tree with a tape measure lol

Response from developer

Thanks for the feedback. I think you must be a very experienced climber if you can climb a tree in 15 seconds 😁.

Bad

Bad just bad

Thought it could be fun to try out, but…

It didn’t work for me. It loads, but won’t measure my trees. I’ll stick to my protector and plum bob, thanks.

Response from developer

Sounds strange, please contact support@arboreal.se and we will try to solve the problem.
