  • Good for sad nerds 18/10 👍👍👍👍👍

I highly recommend to anyone who is interested in literature, philosophy, or is just looking for their place in this world. This game will not give you all the answers. This game should not give you all the answers. But it can be a deeply moving and impactful experience that I would recommend giving a shot.

I first played this game in my freshmen year of high school, I felt emotional and lost (exacerbated by untreated emotion disorders). This game didn't make me understand everything that was going on in my adolescent head but that's exactly why I loved it so much. This game doesn't pretend to be a magical cure to the eternal longing for meaning intrinsic to being human but put me on to years of genuine philosophical introspection and self discovery. Recently(almost four years later) I replayed this game and It was just as good as I remember. I've now read most of the novels in the game and it's clear how much care and passion went into this game. Even just the thought clicking is thought provoking. I cannot express in words the impact that es and the facade and this whole game had on my squishy teen brain. I plan to return to this game again, perhaps after college, until then I will be being :)
  • Thought-provoking, inspiring, and beautiful

This game does not take long to complete, you tap some speech bubbles, turn some pages, and have conversations with a pretty lady. While that may sound repetitive or boring, this is absolutely one of, if not the greatest mobile game I’ve ever played! Every time I got to have another conversation with Es I was so excited to see what she had to say. Those conversations were a great motivation to keep playing the game, and it never got truly boring. If at any point it did, you could just exit the app and come back later to receive more EGO and go from there.
Yes, there are some ads, both in banner and video form. However, they aren’t shoved in your face like most mobile games today. Instead, you get the option to watch a video advertisement in order to get a reward. But these opportunities do not come up too often and I didn’t mind them at all. This game absolutely deserves the ad revenue anyway!
The art is wonderful and the grayscale color palette mixed with the occasional hint of blue was absolutely gorgeous.
I just wish I had discovered this game sooner! It’s such a great experience and I wish I could play it for the first time again.
I will definitely have to buy the extra content, but even if I don’t, I got a satisfying conclusion that I can leave the app feeling fulfilled with.
  • My Review of ALTER EGO (TLDR; it’s really good)

This is a clicker game that explores deep psychological themes. This is a clicker game that you will leave knowing more about yourself than when you first entered. This is a clicker game that will immerse you in its world and have you genuinely feeling for its sole inhabitant as if she were a real person struggling with her meaning in the world. This is a clicker game with multiple endings. This is a clicker game you will think about after you played it. That you'll go back to long afterward, not for its gameplay, but just for a simple "hello". It's a game that got me through one of the toughest times of my life. It's a game that inspires me more than some triple-A console titles ever could. It might not be for you. If you don't play it in small sittings, you could get tired of its gameplay. Maybe you don't care for the personality evaluations or Es' story just isn't your cup of tea. But, as a completely free game (save for the thoroughly unintrusive ads and optional in-app purchases), I promise you that you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by trying it.
