All Versions of My Med Future

1.5

October 30, 2021

In the newest version of the My Med Future app, I've made some important changes to improve functionality and overall user experience. First, the familiar portrait view is back! Second, to facilitate navigation between views, a side menu has been implemented, which can be accessed using the "menu" button or pressing the view toward the left on most views. Additionally, users can quickly go back to a previous view simply by swiping down. Next, accessing program websites has been improved on the back-end so that when URLs change, which they often do, they can quickly be updated in real time. The "Notes" button is now accessible on each state's view so that users can quickly take notes while researching programs. Finally, information has been updated throughout the app to provide clearer insights into the various requirements, experiences, and application services that users will need to understand and navigate in order to prepare competitive professional school applications. Please don't forget to rate the My Med Future app and leave a comment and suggestions for the next update! You can also send an email to rlarocco@mymedfuture.org if you have questions, suggestions, or find a URL that needs to be updated!

With the new version, we've made changes to our web views, added new medical, PT, and PA programs, and updated URLs to program websites. We've also made some minor changes to some of the fonts and colors used to make text easier to read on the screen. Lastly, we've updated information and suggestions in Resources, to include the addition of information and resources to help users better understand the pandemic's impact on gaining extracurricular experiences, professional school prerequisite courses, and admissions processes.

This update utilizes the landscape view to make researching professional school programs and taking notes easier. We've also included a "Take Notes" button on each professional school's web view so that you can quickly take notes while researching admissions requirements. Additional updates include some general restructuring and updated URL's for professional school websites. Note, some professional school's websites are best viewed in portrait, so just rotate your phone when visiting these pages.

Description of My Med Future

The My Med Future app contains a number of useful tools, resources, and information for anyone hoping to become a healthcare professional, as well as parents, academic advisors, and college and university faculty members. The "Explore" section of the app provides a general overview of several health professions, including average salaries, educational requirements, and more. This is a great place to start for those who are newly beginning to consider a career in the health professions. The "Track Progress" and "Research" sections are designed for all users, including those who are currently pursuing a pre-health path at a college, university, or part of a formal post-bacc program, as well as those who may have already graduated and are looking to change careers. "Track Progress" provides users with information and access to resources that will help to better understand prerequisite course requirements, GPAs, and entrance exams, experiences, and even gauge applicant competitiveness. This information is incredibly useful as users work toward meeting requirements and self-assess their competitiveness for professional school. The "Research" section helps to streamline the process of researching programs, including prerequisite and extracurricular requirements, at institutions across the United States. Users search by profession, select a region of the country, then a state, then they are provided with the institutions in each state that have these programs. Each program links to the area of the institution's website that contains admissions information. Additionally, a link at the top of each state's view titled, "View Program Quick Stats!", provides information about the institution's location, size of each class, and more. Lastly, a "Notes" button has been added to each state view allowing users to take notes on information they find while researching programs. The "Resources" section contains incredibly useful tools, such as a competitiveness questionnaire and note-taking tool to document various experiences, as well easy access to additional resources, such as our undergraduate guide, tips to prepare for admissions interviews, overview of composing a personal statement, and much more! Initially, the app will focus on 7 popular health professions: allopathic and osteopathic medicine (M.D./D.O.), dentistry, optometry, physician assistant, physical therapy, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine, with the possibility of additional professions being added at a later date. Finally, the My Med Future app is intended to supplement, not replace, the valuable advice and insights users might receive when working in-person with pre-health advisors, general advisors, and professional mentors. Users are strongly encouraged to seek out these individuals, if available at their institutions, to help them further understand and determine how to best utilize information they access through the app.
