Description of Murmur

Murmur allows voice calls between groups of Bluetooth LE capable devices. Multiple connections between devices create a mesh network, allowing group voice calling and messages for up to 16 participants. The network allows signals to be relayed between devices, allowing the range to far exceed that of a single Bluetooth connection when used in a group. Murmur supports Bluetooth hands-free kits, making it ideal for cyclists, skiers, climbers, hikers or any group activity taking place without reliable cell-tower reception.

    Thanks for the suggestion! I can definitely enable it for wired headphones/speaker. Wireless headphones are a little trickier - as when you use their mics, they switch to a low latency voice mode - which is mono and typically only 16kHz (some are 8kHz, Air Pods Pro 2 are currently 24kHz). Music sounds really bad in this mode, though things might get better in iOS 18 - at least for Air Pods Pro 2. Apple recently announced a few improvements, so I'll certainly look at adding support if it doesn't sound terrible.

  • App works great with a few bugs

    This app is awesome for communicating over short range; like biking or driving in separate cars for road trips with no cell service. It struggles beyond 150 feet or so with direct line of sight or about 70 feet with obstacles / walls.

    The main “bugs” we found: The app would not find the other user (group) with anything but short group names and no password. When we used a longer group name and/or one with a password the phones never found each other.

    Many thanks for helpful feedback - those certainly sound like bugs! I'll take a look at what's causing that and hopefully have them fixed this week. UPDATE: Version 2024.6.7 should hopefully fix the short group name/password issue you identified. Many thanks for letting me know - a regression in the UI framework Murmur uses had disabled the input filtering I'd not spotted. Do let me know if this isn't resolved.
