Description of 28 Categories For Kids

This app was developed by an ASHA certified speech-language pathologist to promote understanding and use of early developing semantic categories and vocabulary. It is appropriate for children who are developing language normally and those who are language delayed. This app focusses on 28 “superordinate” categories, including: appliances, body parts, buildings, cleaning supplies, clothing, colors, desserts, dinosaurs, drinks, farm animals, fruits, furniture, insects, jungle animals, kitchen utensils, letters, make-believe, musical instruments, ocean animals, numbers, people, shapes, school supplies, sports equipment, tools, toys, transportation and vegetables. Each superordinate category contains 8 subordinate members which are each represented by a visually appealing illustrated image. There are 5 activities to choose from, including: SORTING In this activity, the user chooses from 1 to 3 semantic categories on which to focus. Pictured subordinate members are scattered at the top of the screen. The user is directed to drag the pictured items to their appropriate category container. FIND IT! In the “Find It!” game, the user chooses one pictured item from an array of three that belongs to a specifically named semantic category. The game consists of ten trials. A percentage correct score is presented at game’s end. Anywhere from 2 to 5 semantic categories can be targeted in this game. WHICH DOES NOT BELONG? In this game, the user is presented with 2 pictured items from the same superordinate category and one pictured item from a different superordinate category. The user is directed to find the item that does not belong with the other two. The game consists of ten trials. A percentage correct score is presented at game’s end. Anywhere from 2 to 5 semantic categories can be targeted in this game. MEMORY MATCH In this mode the user can choose a category and play an entertaining visual memory game with the associated pictured category members. This lends a fun twist to vocabulary practice. FLASHCARDS Use the flashcard mode to introduce or practice naming of category members. Within each category there are 8 vocabulary words.

  • Super app!

I love the flexibility of this app with such a variety of categories for the littles I work with each day! I have used the free categories, but need to expand as my little people are moving forward consistently. I, too, like others have stated, begin by teaching with the flash cards and moving up slowly so success is always in their favor. Thank you so much!

Another great app by Beemoo, LLC !! This app provides a FREE option to utilize only a few out of the 28 categories. That is not enough!!!! In the purchased version you are able to use all 28 categories, but if this doesn’t convince you DEFINITELY check out the free one for yourself

Yet again another app that engages my students in a motivating and fun way. It provides multiple ways to use the target items within each category to increase vocabulary knowledge. The technicality of the application is awesome. You are able to choose among categories and combine categories together in formats like a sorting, find it, which does not, belong?, memory match, and flashcards. There are no bugs so it makes the app easy to use, just like the articulation bundle they have in the App Store. This makes everything 100% more enjoyable as technological difficulties during this time can add lots of extra stress in our day to days… something I experienced with other speech apps (i.e., they tend to close out/ freeze on me during the day).

How I use the 28 Categories App: I begin with the flash cards to introduce categories. We go through each item and describe (i.e., Category-Function-Attributes). I then combine 2 categories at first (and increase as we progress) within games to assess my student’s knowledge. Easy planning and the students continue asking to play!

It would be awesome if we were able to add our own categories and submit them for others to download, but regardless this was a STEAL of saving my time wisely. Most importantly, it has been a great way to increase categorical knowledge as it provides clear-cut ways for students to organize a schema in the multiple opportunities practicing the vocabulary taught.

The concept of this app is great. However, in my opinion the cost doesn’t match up! I really feel that you should have access to more common categories rather than for them to be locked!

    Developer Response

Hi! If you pay for the app, ALL of the 28 categories are unlocked. Trying confirming your purchase with Apple. Please let us know how this works out!
