Nothing happens

The receipts have been sitting in the app for a full year now and nothing happens. They are not moving up the ladder towards the payment. Entering them directly on the government website is always effective. The app is useless. Nobody answers your emails either. Deleting the app. Waste of time.

Endless loops and stuck on requested

I am only able to successfully log in about 25% of the time. Typically I get stuck in an endless loop of entering my phone number, entering the security code, repeat.
I’ve submitted 2 receipts, both are just sitting in the pending category and never move past requested.

nice idea, but not solid execution

the mechanics of the app are great. I would give it 5 stars if all the features worked reliably, however, plaid integration never exited for me, so hangs in the in-app browser. Also, It is currently giving me an infinite login loop - submit phone number, get text, screen never moves on to enter the code.

Refunds denied

The app can’t differentiate fuel types even though that is a requirement for submitting to the state. I have received letters from the state denying the refund numerous times. Contact with the app via email has not corrected this in app failure in almost a year. 😕

Removes money instead of refunding

I put in three receipts last season and I got the money deducted from my account instead of credited. I have written 3 emails, but no response. I have high hopes still for this up, but they need to rectify their removing of money from my account.

Refund

Nice to get a refund on something I didn’t even know was being taxed in WA state. It’s been easy to navigate and connect with my bank.

Great Idea - Issues with Execution

First, I’ll start with the service that this provides. This is WAY easier than filing through the state directly. Yes, Gallons takes a 20% cut, but I think it’s worth it unless you’re claiming refunds on your megayacht. There are some issues with the app, however. Some of the buttons are annoying as they overlap with the clock and status icons at the top of the screen on an iPhone 12 Pro. They can be tough to acknowledge that you’re tapping them. I’ve also had issues linking my state tax account. I login with my credentials and it goes to a screen saying it’s requesting an authorization code for several seconds…and then nothing. It goes right back to the screen to enter my credentials. No error message, no results. Since I can’t link my account, it’s not functional. Whatever the issue is, the app needs to provide feedback on why it’s failing. Until that’s fixed, it gets only 2 stars from me.

Update: it seems the issues I had with linking my tax account were related to an outage. It was resolved, so I’ve updated my review to 4 stars. I’d still like to see the problems with button locations fixed.

Simple, user friendly, and saves $$$

This app is excellent!! I already spend enough cash trying to keep my boat running. It’s really refreshing to have a simple way to get some of my money back in my pocket. Would 10/10 recommend this app if you are going be spending any amount of time at the fuel pump this summer.

Money in my pocket

Gallons is simple to use and gets money back to me easily. I love the interface and ease of getting my refund.

Cool app but

Cool app but it does not tell how they calculate your refund. Wa state tax is .51 cents but when I submit a receipt they are only giving me about .12 cents a gallon back?

Response from developer

Hi Germaine, I'm sorry to hear the app seems misleading, you are right we don't describe the math, and we should (we will add it to our list of features). But the amount of the refund matches exactly what the state will refund. To be clear, that state taxes $0.494 per gallon (see https://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistration/ftrefunds.html), however, you have to subtract the sales tax. So the math looks like this: StateFuelTax($0.494) - (AverageCostPerGallon ($2.74) - StateFuelTax ($0.494) - FederalFuelTax ($0.184)) * AverageStateSalesTax (8.5%) = $0.318 per gallon. Plus an additional $0.01 less due to the coastal protection fund. If you are seeing only $0.12 a gallon, please let use know by emailing hello@gallons.app and we can see if we can rectify the situation. But we only take a 20% fee on what is refunded from the state, only after the state directly refunds you, so you can be sure we are not deceiving you. Once you feel like the amount of the refund is clear, we would appreciate any adjustments to your review so that future users are not confused about amount of the refund. Thanks.
