Description of IPAKeys

IPAKeys provides a keyboard with letters and symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA, revised version of 2018). With the IPA keyboard you can type • Letters for consonants and vowels, • Diacritics for phonetic details, • Suprasegmentals for prosodic information, • Brackets used to set off IPA transcriptions. The arrangement and grouping of the keys reflect the usual grouping and arrangement of their corresponding phones. If applicable, as the keys of the keyboards provided by the system do, keys of the IPA keyboard reveal more characters and symbols when pressed and hold. P R I V A C Y   S T A T E M E N T I design my software following the principle to only collect, process, and store data that is actually needed for the software to serve its purpose. No single bit more than that. In German, the name of this principle is "Datensparsamkeit". A literal translation of this word is "data thrift". In effect, this means: • IPAKeys has no user accounts. IPAKeys will not ask you for personal data. • Data you enter in the IPAKeys app will not leave the app. In case of the provided keyboard, the characters you type will be passed to the operating system which will process them in order to, for example, insert them into a text field. • No personal data is collected or processed. • No user tracking of any kind is used.

Reviews of IPAKeys

  • I wanted tone diacritics and I got ‘em

In my last review for this keyboard, I mentioned that I ended up having to install a different one temporarily because I needed to input tone diacritics recently. The dev replied that they would be added in a future version, perhaps a month or two away. Surprise! Less than a month later, I’ve got my tone diacritics.

Does this mean the dev will also add the Younger Futhark to his other keyboard ahead of schedule? I’ll just have to wait and see.

    Developer Response

Hi CdrSpock, thank you for your rating. Characters to indicate the level tone are included but what is missing are the characters to indicate the contour tone and, as you mentioned, tone related diacritics. The main keyboard layout is crammed already. I will consider the addition of the missing tone related diacritics and characters, moving all suprasegmentals to the brackets keyboard layout. I am currently working on a different app, though, which I need to finish first. Expect a new version of IPAKeys in about two months. Funny coincidence: I am currently looking into Thai. Update 12-Mar-2021: Tone diacritics have now been added and are available with Version 1.1 of IPAKeys.
