Inaccurate

Tried it in basic oak and maple. It kept identifying them as exotic wood species.

At is all Abisa!??!

After using the app on several pieces of u finished furniture that I was pretty sure weren’t all Abisa (which the app had said they were)… We had to take down a 70 foot Oak in our yard in Pennsylvania. As a test, I used the app on a piece of that lumber… and … again Abisa. So, this app doesn’t work - unless you have a piece of Abisa in front of you.

Wood identifier

This app has a minimal database and consistently mis-identifies my common lumber (cherry, maple, poplar, etc). I would not recommend this app to anyone.

Doesn’t Work Well

Every wood I have imaged into the app comes up as “Abysis” and I’m 100% sure it’s actually Mahogany.

End grain photo database only

I was hoping to use this to put pictures to the stock list of my local woodworking shop.

This only has macro images of different end grains.

I don’t understand why you wouldn’t have a second image with face grain appearance.

I’m new to wood I.D

So far, this is the best of several apps I’ve downloaded. I’m learning about the pores and their patterns.

Love it

It really works well

Terrible access to customer service

I ordered the macroscopic lens. I paid as much as the cost of the lens for shipping. The lens is no where to be found. The tracking number does not work when used on the site. No one will answer my calls, texts, emails or Facebook messages. I’m hoping somebody will respond here. Until then, my rating of one start will stand.

Definitely missing a lot

It has very few trees that are actually listed in my area
Have to use the search function to even find some of the ones missing
Google Lens does a better job
It definitely needs a lot of improvement before I could even consider relying on it for identification
I’m glad I have knowledge of trees cause this app sure doesn’t give the knowledge needed to tell them apart

For instance, Black Walnut and White Walnut are both in my area
I know that they have different names but those are the common names
It needs to have the name of the tree and then all the common names also as this makes it a lot easier to identify a tree

I have an app for plants and it does an extremely good job, gives the actual name, but also all the common names so there’s no confusion

And might I suggest that you add bark and leaf images to the trees?
As not everyone is cutting trees just to see the grain to be able to tel what they are
The bark and leaves can tell what a tree is a lot better than the grain

I’d honestly give this a 0 if I could but in order to put this review, I had to give a star

Response from developer

Hi there, thanks for the detailed review. We will continue to work on improving the app to better suits our users need. Also appreciate the good suggestion for adding bark and leaf images, at the moment the app focuses on providing info for identifying woods rather than the tree itself, but we'll definitely look into that in the future. Have a nice day!

Can't import extant photos

Apparently you must take photos from within the app but the app won't let me access my camera's excellent macro capabilities. And I cannot import photos from my picture library. This makes it useless to me.

Response from developer

Hi Bob, thanks for the review! As of the latest version 1.2 of PocketWood app, you can now import pictures from your device library from within the app. Please give it a try and do leave us a feedback if you have any issues using the app as well!
