Version History of Dipsy Troller V3

2.4.7

April 15, 2023

Too fancy interface, another fix for a well hidden bug.

2.4.6

April 14, 2023

A last minute fix for Dipsy Magnum. Thanks to Mike Lundquist for finding it.

2.4.5

April 13, 2023

This release fix two major bugs around the very new group function. The first one was a problem with previous database and the second an interface sync when adding many divers of the same type in the group. This time, after more extensive testing, we're ready for fishing season. Tight line everybody.

2.3.5b35

March 23, 2023

Dipsy now handles a system of 7 divers simultaneously. Dipsy and all its copies have two functions: to bring the lure to the right depth and to deflect the line out of the boat's path to allow raking with several lines simultaneously. The previous version kept the speed and depth settings of one diver, but if you had several at different positions, you still had to recalculate each time. The "diver group" system allows to keep, each at its position, 7 identical or different divers and to modify them all together to lower or raise the system, or, of course, individually. The favorites allow you to keep the divers of your fishing box at the top of the menu for easy access, you can also hijack the group to visually keep the settings for your most used divers.

version 2.0.5b21

October 27, 2021

We got a request about lower than nominal speeds. So it's true that by design the app doesn't compute the speed under the minimal speed given by the manufacturer. We have added an option, disabled by default, to add this function. It will calculate the speed under 2MPH for all of the Dipsies but also JetDivers, Dreamweaver, BigJon, Chinook, Copper Lines, DeepSix, Slide Diver, TripZ and TruTrip. As usual it is utterly dependant of the buoyancy of the lure itself. In the mean time, we find out an inconsistency between the narrative of the Copper Line help and the calculator. The documentation of the copper line usually states a simple linear algorithm which looks like the lead line: 8 feet depth for 50 feet of line. Some manufacturers think that the copper line doesn't go straight down but as with a parabola. It's our thinking too but we added a new parameter to give you the ability to choose your best bet.

For the last 11 years, I have added sequentially the new divers on the menu. A customer said he was looking for and couldn't find the Tru-Trip Deeper Diver from Big Fish Tuff. And I thought, it was certainly not easy to find anything in the messy menu, so I added this new alphabetic sort. And, at the same time, I have added the Tru-Trip Deeper Diver from Big Fish Tuff, which was missing. New features: - new Tru-Trip Deeper Diver from Big Fish Tuff - new alphabetic sort of the menu

Description of Dipsy Troller V3

Dipsy Troller is an app to interactively get the length of trolling line initially for the Dipsy Troller de Luhr Jensen and some others divers from the same company. As fishermen, we have all opened our fishing box to find that the user data of the divers have been soaked and is unreadable or that we can't find it. It happened to me and to my fishing buddy, so I decided to write this app. The truth is also that to find the right length considering all the factors: the size, the ring, the line, the plates... while driving the boat, putting lines to the water, trying to not hook ourselves, looking at the sonar, trying to get the thermocline depth, adding waypoint when seeing fishes, listening radio for other reports is difficult to say the least. 11 years ago, smartphones were only starting to be in all fishermen pocket but now it is clearly in all pockets.  Dipsies have a very simple data table, while the two values per cell, with or without the ring, make it clearly more difficult to read. But some of the other divers have larger and more complex data tables with tens of columns and rows and even many pages. Now that apps are omnipresent, it was the right time to do another version with more divers.

Reviews of Dipsy Troller V3

  • A hopeful work in progress

This app is wonderfully laid out. I love that you can assign positions to the many possible diving tools on the market. It has easy to use features. However there are some big flaws that have me questioning the validity of the data.

Flaw #1. It has user preferences where you can select meters or feet. And even when you have your preferences set to feet some of the items display the return length in meters. This should be easily fixed in the programming or the app instead of me pulling out a calculator to convert.

Flaw #2. The data is not interpolated or extrapolated to various speeds. It is instead using the luhrJensen 10% difference whether or not it is 2%, 10%, or 15%. Interpolation can also be easily programmed.

I hope if you are considering this app that you buy it in hopes that it will continue to be perfected as it could potentially be an amazing tool. Once this app and my understanding come into harmony I will improve my rating.

Flaw #3. I might be wrong but a dipsy diver is both a weight and a foil. Like sticking your hand out the window of a speeding car your hand will climb and dive with more force the faster you go. Based on this simplistic example of a foil you would assume that the faster you go the deeper the foil should dive. However this is exactly opposite of what this app shows at faster speeds. It is true that weights will dive less the faster you go, but a foil should dive deeper up to a parabolic point. Since a dipsy is both a weight and a foil it might go either depending on whether the foil is the overwhelming force. However when examining the deep six it also dives shallower at faster speeds.

I hope if you are considering this app that you buy it in hopes that it will continue to be perfected as it could potentially be an amazing tool. Once this app and my understanding come into harmony I will improve my rating.
  • Would be a great app if the could get it correct.

Lines lengths can not be shorter the Dept’s. Favorite feature doesn’t work.
