This game is very cool!
Shows a ton of promise
What I liked
The first thing I really liked was the fast meter gain. You can do fun stuff with meter so I’m a fan of this. I was also a fan of the air movement. Airdashes are always fun so seeing this game have them was a fun surprise. The dash cancels were also so much fun and really made me want to dig deep into the combo system, and lab out flashy combos. Finally, in case you haven’t noticed yet I LOVE how this is a proper fighting game on mobile. Those are super rare. However, this game does fall into the traps that other mobile fighting games fell into.
What I didn’t like
The touchpad for movement is just not responsive. There were numerous occasions where I wanted to walk forward but got a jump and was either punished or had to give up my advantage for. I also found inputting specials very finicky. You have to press the direction and special at the same time. This on it’s own presents a ton of (fixable) problems, but the biggest was that canceling into 4S or 6S was just not consistent. I can’t count the times I’ve tried to DP on wakeup only to burst or throw a fireball. And speaking of DPs and fireballs, I feel like this game falls into the SVC Chaos trap of “oops all shotos,” as several characters have specials moves that are a fireball, and uppercut, and an advancing attack. It makes a lot of characters feel like they don’t have their own identity.
I’m sorry if this comes off as me being too critical, I do legitimately want this game to improve, and I have some suggestions that can hopefully help.
Rearrange the control setup a bit. Make super a jump button, make health bars super, and make the d-pad left and right only. This prevents accidental jumping and makes the game feel a lot better. Now, I can understand why you would want to not do this. You can’t have crouching, and therefore can’t have high/low mixups. However, I noticed that due to how rare standing overheads were, I found myself opening people up with a crossup jump normal, which were really strong and ambiguous. I think going all in on the left/right/throw mixes (when throws are added) might be the way to go.
As for the special issues, I don’t know programming, but I think you would just need to check for what direction is currently being pressed, as opposed to what direction was pressed at the same time as special.
I would also move burst to super instead of special because chances are people are less likely to wakeup with super than a DP.
Finally, character design is a tough thing to help with, because it’s more of an art than a science. Maybe try throwing ideas around until you have a character you like?
Oh man, that was longer than I thought. I really do want this game to be the best it can be, so hopefully this feedback can go towards making the game better. All suggestions were noted and we'll have our dev check on them for consideration (actually the gameplay & characters are being developed by a solo game developer named @angrydevs on twitter and discord). Likewise, we appreciate your concern for our game. We also would like to create a high quality fighting game for mobile, though we're not FGC pro, rest assured that we're still working on improving and on polishing the game further.
