Description of Beat Watcher

This simple app is designed to do one thing well: alert you when your heart rate goes above and back below a BPM threshold you set. Beat Watcher integrates with the Health app to read your heart rate. Use this app as a way to listen to your body. It can be great for: • recognizing and managing stress • breathing exercises • meditation • working out Some users with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) have found this app helpful for monitoring and managing symptoms. Turn the Digital Crown on Apple Watch to set the desired BPM threshold. Then, you'll hear a sound and feel a vibration when your heart rate goes above the threshold, and a different sound and vibration when your heart rate goes back below the level you set. Optionally turn on Background Mode to continue getting haptic and audible feedback in response to your heart rate after you drop your wrist or leave the app. Enable the Persistent Alerts setting to continue getting haptic and audible feedback every two seconds while your heart rate remains above the set threshold. Or, if you just want constant heart rate monitoring without the haptic and audible feedback, you can turn Alerts off entirely. This app also works with a Bluetooth chest strap heart rate monitor, like the Polar H10, paired with your Apple Watch. Using it this way can improve battery life of the Apple Watch when you leave Background Mode running for a long time, since your Apple Watch heart rate sensor is not running constantly. Also, this lets you continue getting audio feedback from your Apple Watch or see your heart rate on the Apple Watch screen even when you aren't wearing it, like when it's on the charger. Note: Background Mode will not work at the same time as a Workout started in another app. For example, if you start Background Mode in Beat Watcher and then start an Outdoor Run Workout in the built-in Workouts app, Beat Watcher will not continue to run in the background. This app requires watchOS 8 or newer, which requires Apple Watch Series 3 or newer.

Reviews of Beat Watcher

Beat watcher

Wonderful and helpful app!

Response from developer

Thanks for the nice review! I’m glad you find it helpful!

Lifesaver app

I've had tachycardia for decades, and this is the first app that gives me an audible/haptic notification when my heart rate is too high ... instrumental when I'm sleeping or not looking directly at my Apple Watch all the time. I changed my Apple Watch face to "Modular Compact" to use the Beat Watcher (Heart Rate) complication across the entire bottom of the watch, which is very useful when I'm sleeping or I don't have my glasses on.

It's the best money I've ever spent on an app ... for me, it's been a lifesaver. Thanks for making this app and making it so affordable - I regularly promote this app to other veterans with similar heart conditions.

(UPDATE) A few days ago, while I was at the VA Clinic, Beat Watcher alerted me to an elevated heart rate of 127 ... so I pulled out my KardiaMobile 6L EKG device, and I was able to record a tachycardia event. Generally, when the VA takes an EKG, it's normal by the time they settle me into an exam room; however, Beat Watcher allowed me to record a tachycardia event to show my doctor ... without Beat Watcher, I might not have gotten an early warning to the heart arrhythmia and tachycardia episode.

(Suggestion) I want to change the alert tone on Beat Watcher because it currently sounds like every other alert on my Apple watch. Additionally, I had to disable the iOS11 Smart Stack on my Apple watch to keep using Beat Watcher as expected, not a big deal since Beat Watcher is significantly more important to me than Smart Stack.

Response from developer

Thank you so much for the nice review! I really appreciate the kind words about the app and I’m so happy it’s valuable to you. Regarding your suggestion to change the sound, that sound is built into the system alongside the haptic feedback that happens. Changing it would require creating a custom, separate type of haptic feedback and a custom sound. At this point, I think it makes more sense to stick with the system standard as they are well-designed and understood by users. And, regarding the Smart Stack, I understand the issue you're talking about, and unfortunately it's a limitation of the system behavior that it always shows up in the Smart Stack while running in the background. There is not a way for me to disable that as the developer of the app.
