Almost great

This app is so close to great. It is intuitive, super helpful (mirroring, word and phrase suggestions, word counts). But there are things missing. Here’s my wishlist:

- Allow me to assign a box style to an entire word. Styling boxes one by one is tedious - Clues are not saved if you don’t enter them perfectly. Like if it came back to the app while writing a clue, it will appear to be fine, but it isn’t saved. I ended up backing out of my puzzle every time I wrote a clue just for that. - Let me reference another answer and highlight it - let me write clues via a list instead of having to find every word separately

Can’t figure it out….

How do I move the placement of the numbers for the words? There is so little instruction.

Great for construction work on the go!

I am very much just an amateur constructor, but this app single-handedly quadrupled my productivity. Being able to edit on the go on my phone is a game changer. The word list is definitely adequate for me. Thank you for making this, and for free.

I would love to see some more share options, such as exporting a .puz file. The pdf only option is too limited, so I usually end up cluing on other software. Like other suggested, I’d pay an upgrade (ideally one-time!) for this functionality.

Thank you to the developer! You have reignited my construction passion!

Great except for bug (updated)

I generally really like this app! It doesn’t have quite as many features as Phil, but since Phil is web-based and I can’t use it on my iPad this is a great alternative. However, there is a bug where every time I try to fill in a square on the bottom half of the grid, the whole grid slides down toward the bottom of the screen behind the keyboard. This isn’t a dealbreaker because when I close the keyboard I can see the whole grid again, but it is really annoying and it would be nice if this could be fixed. Other than that it’s great!
UPDATE: the developer was super quick to respond and fix the issue! Changed my rating to 5 stars :)

Response from developer

Glad to hear you’re enjoying the app — and thank you for reporting the keyboard issue! I haven’t been able to reproduce it myself, so if you have a moment, would you mind emailing a screenshot to cruciverbalistfeedback@gmail.com? It would also be helpful to know which model of iPad you’re using, and the version of iOS (in Settings > General > About).

Promising

This is ON THE WAY to becoming a great App. There’s one major flaw that needs urgent attention: the auto-numbering doesn’t work and counts almost every square and I can’t find a way to fix it. Some minor tweaks on page zooming that aren’t too bothersome but need some attention. Once the former issue is solved, this looks as though it could be a brilliant crossword design app.

It looks like you’re in the UK, so I’m guessing you are seeing this issue because the numbering is designed for American style crosswords, where every square is considered to be part of both an across and a down word. I will have a fix in version 1.9. If you have more details about any other issues you’ve seen, please email cruciverbalistfeedback@gmail.com. It’s particularly helpful if you can include a screenshot!

Very cool app!

Very cool app! I like it lots! Thanks Miranda

Great new update

The new update is a massive improvement. Love that dictionary suggestions can be toggled off, and that there are more options for types of squares. Thank you to the developer!

One improvement i would like to see in a future version is a way to play my crossword in-app, so others can try without having to markup a PDF. Otherwise, excellent work!

Excellent creator app

A great app for crossword constructors, especially if you’re into completing your fill by hand. I do most of my constructing on my commute and using PC or browser-based apps wasn’t really an option. The light weight interface is really easy to work with and the built in dictionary suggestions are really helpful with good variety.

Have noticed a bug with autosave failing every now and then and a duplicate puzzle gets saved. Doesn’t happen very often. Would also love a .puz export option to load to different sites for sharing.

Overall an excellent app. I highly recommended for anyone looking for a simple constructing app.

Fun, easy, relaxing

This is a super-fun, easy-to-use app for crossword construction. I downloaded this last night and created my first ever puzzle in a couple of hours. It was a blast.

I love being able to construct on my phone… opening my laptop feels too much like work!

I imagine that this is a labor of love for Ms. Strand, but FWIW I’d happily pay a few bucks for some “premium” features like exporting in .puz format so I could more easily share it with friends. Even better? A way to share a link which would take someone directly to my puzzle which I could just share over text message.

I’d also really like a way to select and move answers around… that’d be really useful during the theme and grid creation phase.

The other thing which would be cool would be a quick shortcut to create black squares – like a double-tap for instance.

Overall, though – this is great. Thank you, Ms. Strand, for this awesome contribution to the crossword community!
