Great potential but annoying quirk

This app will not let you log in in any capacity without receiving an SMS to a phone, thereby excluding anyone without a phone (indeed, anyone without a British one — quite annoying as an intl student!) not only that, but the frequent updates (which are good, to be clear — lots to be excited about) always log you out and then I can’t log back in without incurring international sms fees. Why is there no option to add an email or username or anything else to log in with, at least after your first time setting up an account ?
