  • Great character art at your fingertips

I love to use this app to make portraits of my NPCs in my D&D campaign. I need a tabaxi that looks like a regal black cat Paladin, easy. I need an old looking gnome wizard for a magic university lecturer, done. Bring your campaigns to life with this amazing (and fun) app.
  • Great work, easy use, responsive development team

I had meant to write a review for a while and wanted to write in full but I’m at uni and don’t have time for that so here’s a shorter one.

The app is easy to use and can produce a variety of highly customised images. As such it is great for roleplaying games. It is also useful for using as a base to work further art from. A friend of mine has made some excellent AI shaped images using this app as a core. I have used it for paintings and made some cool things with the portraits in Photoshop.
I backed the Kickstarter and am very glad to have done so. I will absolutely buy whatever expansions the developers create. I have been a part of the beta-testing process and have had a lot of fun with that also. The team of producers are charismatic and highly responsive.
Aight, that’s all for now. Enjoy.

  • An excellent app for making game tokens!

I got this because I wanted to make some character tokens for a game I am running, and wow, it has a lot of options! Different races, different classes, adjust the color on gear, different gear. And so easy to use. Just missing one thing! There are cat folk, bird folk and lizard folk. Dog folk? 🙂

  • Glorious Artwork

Have enjoyed using this app to create character portraits for my D&D games. Love how the general look is consistent and gives off the RPG hand-drawn feel, I’ve enjoyed customizing my own PC’s using it, it’s truly been a blast. Bravo!
  • Fun, versatile, labor of love

This is my default app for making portraits for RPG characters. The customization is very extensive, and the frames/background scenery offer a lot of options to display your PC in their best light. Highly recommended.
  • Best tool out there. Second to none.

I have searched for other similar programs for the past couple of years and the ones I have found, have all fallen WAY short to this product. I have been using PortraitWorks since its kickstarter and it has done nothing but get better and better. I tons of NPC/PC portraits for my D&D campaigns, other ppls campaigns, and since I bought the Publishing Rights Package, Ive been able to do “side hustle” for a little bit of extra cash. Overall though, its easy too use. The learning curve is minimal. Yes the core basic program is free. Yes you have the options to buy in-app purchases to expand your options to make even more better portraits and customization, but it is well worth it. You wont be sorry. If you want to use it for just personal use for your campaigns and players, I personally recommend to buy the full package. What is it?? Like 30 dollars or something? Just as much as a game? I have spent hundreds of hours on it always creating new and unique portraits. Having photoshop or related skills is just a plus for even more true customization. PERFECT for virtual table top games.

  • Best in class

By far the best tool for generating and creating RPG portraits I’ve ever seen. It’s become indispensable for my virtual tabletop campaigns, where I use it to provide tokens for everyone according to the specific character appearance they’re after. Also proving useful for some personal projects. I’m currently using portraits generated here to help me index at a glance characters in a story I’m writing.

  • One of the best Kickstarters I’ve ever backed!

As one of the original Kickstarter backers, I’ve created countless portraits from the first beta up to this release. It’s come a long way and been an invaluable aid to me as a DM. It’s perfect for creating NPC portraits. You can spend hours customizing an important NPC, or quickly spin up a random portrait on the fly. The portraits also work as great reference images for commissioning art.

  • Great Tool for DM’s, Players, & Adventure writers.

I have been using PortraitWorks since beta. The app is great for DM’s to make portraits of NPCs on the Fly or have artwork for adventures and storyline as well as importing in for Tokens for VTT or crafting use in games. My players love it as I am sure many do to hash out appearances of their Character creator on the fly. They have an excellent support group on Discord that make assistance with any issues a breeze with developer help. I look forward to the Expansions to come in the future for this app as they are always working on improving it.
