  • Lacking functionality like others

I was using Channels app with HDHomeRun and a cable card. I had to move to Selco app. The Selco app lacks many of the Channels features. The most missed functionality are
    - auto skip commercials when watching a recording.
    - start and end time adjustments for recording preferences so the recording doesn’t end prematurely. F1 is a good example.
    - a back button to go to previously watched channel
    - search for upcoming shows. For example, could not schedule a recording unless the show appeared in the guide.

    Poor functionality/ bugs:
    - could do a better job adjusting resolution based on network speed.
    - go backwards and forwards while viewing a live show. Can go back but then can’t go forward.
    - never use OnDemand because it is so lacking.
    - lack of app updates! 3 updates in last year. Last update 9 months ago.

    Selco app nice features are
    - Catchup
    - no setup box needed.

I will likely pursue other options given the app is so lacking.

  • Limitations with “Live” TV

Our town owned and operated cable company is doing away with traditional cable boxes by fall of ‘24 and will only provide a streaming service, so I decided to just get it now. For all the features that come with streaming services like rewind, DVR, and “catch up” you also now have the annoyances inherent in streaming when trying to just watch live TV. -Some “Live” channels are a minute or two behind the actual time, so shut off your socials when watching sports if you don’t want to know what’s about to happen. -The channel listing feature is flaky. When it’s viewed it is always on the last channel and time that I used it. I have to manually update it to show the current time and shows. The channel listing should stay current and by default should be on the current channel being watched. -You can’t search in the channel listing and you can’t set any reminders for shows you want to watch. -You can’t go directly to a channel. You have to go to the channel list, scroll up or down and then tap/click twice to get to a channel because it first provides you with some info about the show. -You can’t simply exit the channel listing and return to the channel currently being watched, you have to go back to menu, scroll down, and select Fullscreen. -To make scrolling faster in the channel listing there should be an option to hide channels that you don’t watch. You can’t set a “start on” channel or set a group of “favorite” channels. You can’t tell me these features can’t be added to an app these days. -To go back to the last channel you were watching that’s another 2 or 3 taps/clicks and it takes several seconds for the picture to display versus just hitting the back button on a cable remote and getting a near instant picture. -Even though it doesn’t say so here, they did an update and it’s now very glitchy. At times the app starts and wants me to pick the User, even though only one user is allowed and the option not to select users is set. More frequently now the app loads and says there’s a problem connecting and some features may not work, meaning the entire streaming service doesn’t work. -I haven’t tried the DVR feature but I’ll assume that works as advertised. The app started off OK, but after their last update I now have to restart my AppleTV daily to get it working again. I have this same app on a Roku, in the same house, and using the same internet, and I do not have these issues at all. All my other streaming apps on my AppleTV work as well. It’s just this app with the problems. if you’re a SELCO customer do yourself a favor; you’re better off using the Roku or Google versions.

-On the plus side, once I’m on a channel the streaming hasn’t so far been glitchy or any buffering issues - but I have had the app totally quit twice now.
-I haven’t tried the DVR feature but I’ll assume that works as advertised.
The app is OK, but if you’re using it primarily for live TV viewing then you’ll just have to get used to it not being as easy and intuitive as traditional cable TV service and remote.
