Version History of MIDI Layers

v1.06 B72 The Group Mixer now sends CC7/10 (or however configured) when changing scenes. Make sure the settings are set to send CC for volume. Make sure you have saved a snapshot to that scene, and ensure each layer is assigned to a unique group. NOTE: This change allows you to configure a scene to change instruments as well as volume and pan when the scene is initially selected.

Fixed an issue processing CC layers in the correct order. Fixed a possible crash when selecting beyond the layers range after a deletion. You can now use CC 0 to unmute all layers. A control layer no longer passes notes to lower layers. Position the layer below all other layers if you require pass through. Fixed an issue where layer names don't quite fit in a layer, we no longer get truncated names.

Improved the algorithm for handling CC64 (damper pedal) and CC66. Added an Un-Mute All AU parameter that turns off all muted groups and layers. We now filter CC data for muted groups. Fixed an issue where the layer options mute group was not properly updated. Added a new Group Mixer window to control volume and pan for mute groups (see help manual). I now apply layer input channel filtering to CC messages if enabled.

Added new Monophonic sequencer modes (Off, Last Note, Bass Note, Arp Asc, Arp Dec, Random). You can now use a pedal connected to the exposed AU Next/Prev Scenes parameters to move through all 72 scenes. Added a new latch feature to the layer sequencer menu. You can now latch one of more layers individually. Added a Sequencer Un-latch Control layer. (0-unlatch all, 1-unlatch layer 1, 2-unlatch layer 2 etc.). Added the ability to send a CC and value to any port/channel on scene change (configure in Scene Selection window). Double tapping on the far right of a layer toggles the Latch mode of the sequencer. Long pressing the MENU button doubles as an un-latch ALL sequencer layers. Added a default setting to the CC Control Options window. This allows an optional default value to be sent for each CC layer when a scene is changed. Added new colour coding to the display. On the left each layer displays its active status, on the right the type of layer (control, normal, sequence). When muting a layer manually it now stops latched sequences. Fixed an issue with Sequencer Gate time being 1% out with the menu (rounding error). Fixed an issue which caused a crash when creating a new session after adding scene control layers to all layers. If you resize or move a layer all playing notes on that layer are now cancelled. Added a continuous pattern mode to the layer sequencer to avoid patterns being reset when a key is pressed. Added a sequence option to expire all playing sequencer notes immediately after all notes lifted. Fixed Paste scene no longer links the sequencer to the original. We can now paste scenes into different banks. Layers now fires off Program Changes for the selected scene after loading preset.

Added the scene bank button. Banks A-F allow 6 sets of 12 scenes. Added a layer harmony option which allows us to play 5th, 7th, and octave effects. Added an input trigger channel for each layer. This allows layers to be controlled by more than one master keyboard. This version allows the sustain pedal to pass through to layers regardless of the 'Mod Wheel/CC' setting. Updated help. Fixed an issue which caused the Program Changes to be fired before the scene had completed changing. Added a layer sequencer, allowing an automated sequence yo be played on each layer. Added a 'Quick Switch Mute Groups' to Settings to be have instant toggle and resume of layers.

You can now add a CC Control layer type. This allows you to fire off MIDI CC values when a key is pressed within a layer. To change CC layer options, long press 'Add Layer' and select 'Control Layer Options'. Added Next / Prev Scene control via AU parameters. Layer names are now displayed (outside the layer) on small layers with less than 3 notes. Added the ability to map any of MIDI Layers output ports to physical MIDI ports. Added a new Pitch and Modulation wheels window. Added a new TouchPad view allowing you to configure X/Y CC values. The Touchpad is configured in Settings -> TouchPad X/Y Settings. The TouchPad and Mod Wheel / CC need to be turned ON in the Layer Options window. Pitch Bend is turned on by default, but Mod Wheel is not. We now save the positions of the Mute Groups, Scenes, Notes, TouchPad and Pitch/Mod wheel windows with the session.

Description of MIDI Layers

MIDI Layers is an AUv3 MIDI plugin designed to allow sophisticated routing of MIDI data in hosts such as AUM or Cubasis. Have you ever wanted to play multiple instruments from a single master keyboard during a live performance? Would you like to be able to set up keyboard splits, crossfade layers or create an ensemble of layered instruments? If you answered yes to either of those questions, then MIDI Layers may be your solution. Layers allows you to create up to 12 scenes, each with up to 127 layers, spanning your entire master keyboard. These scenes allow you to seamlessly switch between various layer mappings at any time during a performance. Each layer controls the MIDI output, which can be routed to one of MIDI Layers 16 output ports and 16 channels. So if you have 5 layers in your scene, each layer is able to divert MIDI key input to 5 destinations, allowing you to control 5 instruments from one master keyboard. Layers can overlap, meaning you can create an ensemble of two or more instruments. Layers can also have cross fades so that you can fade from one instrument to another across a specified range. You can also control the velocity curves of a layer if you need to emphasize note velocity at a certain set of octaves. Each layer can also be remapped so that you can target a different key range on the destination instrument. This allows you to have several single note layers that can target specific drum machine samples for instance. You can assign a song per scene, or have several scenes containing parts of the same song. Switching scenes is simple, using the on screen scene buttons, via AU parameters, or you can even add a special control layer to a scene which can then be triggered via your master keyboard. It is also possible to assign a Program Changes to a layer. When you switch scenes, each layer can fire off its own program change to your destination instruments. Each scene can be assigned its own scale, which enables you to play using only the white notes so say goodbye to wrong notes. Finally, layers can be assigned to mute groups, allowing you to quickly turn on/off groups of layers with a single key or button press. Features: ○ Up to 127 layers per scene. ○ 12 scenes per preset. ○ Supports 16 output ports and 16 channels. ○ Remote switching of scenes using MIDI or AU. ○ Supports layer mutes and mute groups. ○ Named scenes with large scene selection mode. ○ Supports scales per scene which can be played using white notes only. ○ Each layer can define a Program Change that is sent when scenes are switched. ○ Supports per layer velocity curve. ○ Supports per layer remapping of notes on output. ○ Each layer can have a cross fade settings assigned. ○ Definable Master Keyboard size (6, 7, 8 or 10 octave). ○ Scene and mute control layers. ○ Provides default custom layouts. Please Note: This product will not work with GarageBand since it cannot load AUv3 MIDI plugins.

  • Doesn’t work fully in Cubasis

App does not work fully in Cubasis. Wasted money. It was designed for AUM. Only a few of the features are available in Cubasis. Developer needs to be more honest in his description.
  • Brilliant, just Brilliant.

I have been using this app for a while now and I just have to say that Layers is incredible, many of my projects use 3 or 4 different synth apps as lead instruments, the cross over from one synth app to another using just one keyboard and playing all parts in the same key area is seamless without any notes cutting off as you would normally get by just using Program Change using just one synth, no need for keyboard zones. You won’t realise how useful this app is until you have used it. 17th Oct. A MASSIVE thank you to Paul for his dedication in adding a new “ALL MUTES OFF” feature that I requested, Midi Layers just gets better and better ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1st SEPT. As soon as I saw Paul’s YouTube demo of Midi Layers and what it is capable of, I purchased it without question. At first it took a little while to get into it in Cubasis3, but once I played around with it I soon realised what a fantastic useful app this is. Paul must have an amazing brain to produce an app of this calibre, he also has a knack of creating apps that we didn’t think we would need, but wow, we need them for sure, I wish this technology (and Paul’s apps) were available during the 90’s 👍 Thanks Paul
