  • Great app. One or two small bugs.

I think this is a really fun app and a good introduction to interactive fiction. It offers a pretty good range and number of stories (I haven't tried downloading any from the site yet, although it mentioned something along those lines was possible in the in-game guide), and from the stories I've played, they seem pretty fun. I haven't really played IF before, other than Zork, so I thought it would be a fun experiment... and so far it's been turning out really well. I'm happy. From what I can see, the commands and story interaction are functioning as they should (I haven't encountered any major bugs), but there is a small bug when I want to resume stories I've already played: I can't scroll down far enough to see the command I'm typing and have the screen stay there without keeping my finger on it the whole time. Obviously I don't want to do that, as it's easier to type in commands with two hands (I use a Brookstone keyboard to type, and other than the scenario in which I'm describing, there haven't been any problems with that-- I don't know if that's why I'm experiencing this problem or if it happens even when you use the keyboard on the touch screen), so it's a minor annoyance. Other than that, though, the app works well and it does a great job at providing a fun experience.

  • Best app ever! <3

This app is perfect. Absolutely brilliant. It ties in perfectly with the interactive fiction data base and works like a charm. (Now whenever I write an email, I'll click the button at the top on accident thinking it drops the keyboard but instead it just sends the message. xD) I have used this app a billion times, and it is the PERFECT travel companion! I definitely recommend this app to all text adventure fans. I think it's also really cool that because infocom is a tight knit community, you keep bumping into people. (Take for example, Emily Short) Most people in the community use ifdb and a lot of people use frotz. There are a few things however: I recently started having issues with going onto the site in frotz. When I click download, it goes to my list with ought saying anything. Then when I go back to the site and click again, it does the usual "____ has been added to the list". Also, when I click a link, sometimes it will glitch out and send me below the bottom of the page. And I can't delete the game Inform School, it froze and now I can't reset it or anything. (I can delete other games though.) Please help me with my issue. All issues aside, however, The game is phenomenal. Now you have a choice.

You're inside your room, a nice, quiet, cozy area of sorts, laying on your bed. A glowing apple device lays in your hands. As you read the reviews of assorted frotz users, you begin to wonder, 'Should I get Frotz?' What do you do?

  • Wonderful app and you'll never run out of replayability

To begin with, I had no idea what text-based video games were until I came across Frotz, and I'm glad I did. For me, the only experience I had similar to this were the Choose Your Own Adventure books growing up. In today's video games, many are visually and graphically oriented. With Frotz, you use your imagination, and it really makes for an exciting experience. To start a game, just choose from the directory of which there are hundreds of titles (and many more than you can download from your wireless connection). As you read through the story, you'll be prompted to choose a direction or next step (e.g. ring doorbell, walk south, say hello), and it's as simple as using an action verb. From there, the text responds accordingly to what you've typed. Frotz include a short introduction on commands which will help you get started. For many of us from the younger generation, Frotz provides a different kind of gaming that requires attention, imagination and more importantly, an open mind. With all of those working together, you choose your path in the story. If you're sitting anywhere where you have a few minutes to spare like the airport or in a waiting room, Frotz is perfect for that. The different stories really immerse you so plan to take some time with this. Try it and you'll see what I mean.

  • Entertaining and worth your time.

Frotz is an overall entertaining app, providing many interactive stories and text adventures right in your hands. Unfortunatley, Frotz does have some downfalls. On my first attempt at use (The Weapon was the story I chose), the commands were limited and repetitive (A series of "examine" commands leading to an "activate" over and over). Overall, however, the story was entertaining, if not laggy at points, until I used the "activate powerup stud" command, upon which the story locked up, unable to proceed. Another issue I encountered was the lack of a savestate or otherwise method of closing the program and coming back to the same point later. Both issues are easily fixed and users would not be unreasonable to expect fixes in the near future. Contrary to the most of this review, the application is overall enjoyable if you find a story that works for the iPhone or iPod Touch, and is worth the time to complete the stories in long periods of time. Overall, the app is basically a webpage-style UI which appears to be designed for computer use. The price is right and no subscription of any sort is required to use. PROS: Entertaining stories, well replicated nostalgic text adventures, great choose-your-own-story execution, improved auto-correct to make commands easy to type, virtually unlimited numbers of downloadable content. CONS: App is designed for computers, laggy at points, lock-up on some stories, limited commands on some stories.
