  • Fun game especially after the update.

I got this when it was free. There were no rules posted and the speed was too fast to understand what was happening. I almost deleted it but was too lazy. Then came the update - much improved! I now had rules to learn how to play and I could slow things down to help me see the iPod's moves and strategies. This is now one of the games I play on a regular basis and would gladly pay the .99 if I had to. Can't wait to see what the next update will bring, hopefully one of the things is a new icon. As others have said, the big plus sign is kind of lame and gives no indication of what this game is about like the old icon did. Bring the old icon back. Other than that, great game!

    1. You can't listen to your iPod and play this game at the same time. There are games that allow the game sounds and music to play at the same time, so it shouldn't be a problem.
    2. This could just be me, but when playing against the iPhone, I don't get a free turn if my seeds land on my side, but it seems to apply to the phone; not cool.

  • 4.5

I got this when it was free, and I must say, I really enjoy it. I had no idea how to play when I first downloaded it, but I looked up the rules online, and I became pretty good, and I definately think it's worth $.99
  • Worth it

The upgrades have made significant improvements. Rules are accessible if u r new to the game. Nice design look and feel. Easy or hard to beat difficulties. Always the game I come back to now that I get how to play! Always fun.
  • Excellent, newbie friendly

When I first saw this app I snatched it up, hoping I could learn Mancala with it. Originally no instructions were included, so I just waited patiently for the promised update and I am very glad I did.

The rules are well-written and I, somone who has never played Mancala previously, was able to follow them and pick it up quickly.

Being able to adjust the animation speed is a great addition and really has helped me better understand what's happening on the game board. The colourful pieces help in the same regard.

I also appreciate being able to adjust the A.I. difficulty and I hope to use the two-player mode soon.

As another person mentioned I might not mind if it were possible to disable the numbers, and net play would be an excellent addition. If you do add net play, please add ratings a la chess. It's nice to have an idea of your opponent's ability.

I really only have two small complaints. The A.I. sometimes is repetitive, and the new icon isn't very appealing. When I see it I don't think "Mancala" at all. I preferred the previous one!

Inoltre, thanks very much for this fine app, and for introducing me to this fun game! I look forward to future updates.

  • Could be better

The animation is too fast and makes it hard to follow your opponent's moves. Also it's a little boring without any sound. Meh, three stars.

    UPDATE: Oct 19, 2008
Wow! What a difference an update makes! This game plays so much better with a slower animation speed and sound! Rules are also a great addition for those new to the game. Developer, thank you so much for listening to our comments and making changes to better the game. :) Totally worth $.99 and I would have paid for this, had I not gotten it when it was free.

  • not quite according to Hoyle...

Really want to like this game, but. The cups count is hidden to real players in meatspace, shouldn't it be so here? When a player has no pieces on his own side, the opponent still has to play -- the opponent doesn't just get to eat all of the seeds. Though that may be a varient I am unfamiliar with. Needs formal rules and a way to set them, not sure if the player should see the seed count in each cup. But I really want to see this app succeed -- my kid and I play mancala every weekend, now we can do it when i pick her up from piano lessons! Needs polish, but I like! It has a good beat, you can dance to it -- I'll give it an 8!

  • Mr.

While it's true that sound and a smoother, slower animation would improve the game, it's still a great board game and should not be dismissed. I am very annoyed at all of the 1 star reviews because of this. These are niceties, but don't actually affect gameplay. I also saw a lot of 1 star reviews from confused players who didn't bother to read the rules. Mancala's rules are not obvious, and a copy of them should be included in the future, but that is reduculous to rate it low bc of your laziness. Finally, some reviewers gave it ridiculously low ratings of the computer's skill level. Perhaps they failed to notice the difficulty slider in the settings? While in the normal setting it is highly difficult, it is manageable at the lowest few settings, allowing enormous potential for growth in the player's skill. This game isn't likely to become boring bc the player is too smart for the AI. An option to be player 2 against the CPU player would also be appreciated. All in all, the app has room for small improvements, but is an addicting, quick, and entertaining board game, and is well worth your time, especially since it has local multiplayer.

  • would be fun if you could follow it.

You make your move. Poof, some things move around. If you understand the rules (my copy doesn't show them), then you've anticipated what will happen. But then, iPod moves... Poof! Lots of stones move around and now there's a pile in the iPod's store. Not much fun though it could be with a better pace.

  • Couldn't stop playing

Maybe I am a little too competitive, but I could not close the app until I beat the AI at least three times. I actually learned a few moves.... This app is fun!!!
