Kanji LS Touch User Reviews

Disappointed

The way the app tests writing input is it actually doesn’t. It just gives you a notepad to draw on, then you can reveal the stroke order, then you yourself decide whether you were correct or not. “Learn Japanese! - Kanji” by Luli Languages LLC is a much better app as it corrects your stroke order in real time. I do not recommend trying this app as the App Store/developer does not offer refunds so there is no trial period to decide whether this app fits a user’s needs.

Best app for learning kanji that I’ve found so far

I can’t just memorize kanji by looking at them. For me, I needed an app that taught me how to write them - it’s the only way I could really learn them. So far, I’ve made it through the N5 and N4 sets (284 total). Best way to use this tool is to go to Settings/Test Set and set the range to 20 characters at a time. As I then test myself every day, and start consistently getting 100%, I move the range from “86-105” to “91-110” (for example). That way I’m introducing a small amount of new material and reinforcing the old. I recommend this app to everyone I know who is learning Japanese!

Needs work

Maybe it was good at the time it was developed over 10 years ago or if it was free. I got this app because of the option to take a test by drawing the kanji to answer instead of typing. However, when you submit your answer it has you push the next stroke button to compare yours to theirs and then you decide if you got it right or not. This too too long even with the most simple kanji and can only imagine the pain it’ll be when doing the 10+ kanji. Considering it’s paid and the Japanese learning innovation these days from other websites and apps, I would have at least expected it to tell me if I got the answer wrong and try again. I would happily change my review if it improved and it helped my study, but at this point I feel I’m better off looking at an image of kanji stroke order and using paper and pencil

Response from developer

Thanks for the feedback. It's not necessary to skip through all strokes. You can also base your correct/wrong decision solely on the kanji itself. Most users actually do that. Only if you are unsure about the order you can skip through the individual kanji. The reason why I let the user decide, is to avoid false wrong/correct judgment by the app (and subsequent bad ratings: "App sometimes judges my correctly written kanji as wrong"). No matter how good an algorithm you use, this can never be avoided. Every user might have a different point on the threshold of what is still correct. For instance stroke order: Some users might still see their answer as correct even if their stroke order is slightly different from the text book order. Also some advanced fast drawing users might already adapted a certain handwriting style. This style might still be readable by a person and technically correct but judged as wrong because the strokes are to far of the reference strokes.

Quite good

A good way to learn kanji.
However, if more radicals were identified and explained, it would accelerate learning.

The ability to vary and have so much control over the test modes is excellent.

Kanji Components was added. Progress should not be forgotten on update. Furthermore you can always backup your progress to iCloud or your PC.

Great App to Learn Kanji!!

This app has been great. I have used it for several years and it is the simplest way to practice Kanji! Highly recommended for anyone studying Japanese.

Great App, Wonderful Support!😀

After running into a few major issues one of the developer's other apps (which ended up being the fault of my device ) and emailing the developer I received immediate support. This app itself is smooth, simple, and fantastic for learning to write Kanji. The app is all about utility and it performs! There is a huge amount of content and many ways to test yourself and learn. The most unique and helpful feature that it offers is the ability to grade your own writing and stroke order in a step by step manner. There is no automatic writing detector to be picky and mark you wrong because the angle was "slightly off". This app makes studying and learning Japanese a breeze! It is an absolute must have for any learner! Thank you Jan for bringing this helpful tool to life! I don't have a single regret in purchasing this app!

Japanese LS kanji

This is an update to a previous four-star review I posted two years ago. The issues I identified at that time have all been resolved, and the support from the developer has been excellent. This app is absolutely packed with features. After using it for two years, I am still stumbling across new ones. It's not cheap, but if you are serious about learning the kanji, this is the best investment you will ever make.

Love this but

I love this app, I have both the Japanese and kanji LS apps but they are completely broken right now on my iPad 2 iOS 5. Cannot draw anything in the practice or test modes

I won't be updating!

I had updated the developers Kana LS app and the new interface is ugly and awkward. I was hoping he'd leave the kanji version alone. I will NOT be updating.

The original version is elegant, attractive and easy to use. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!

excellent app (especially on an ipad)

I have quite a few Japanese and Kanji apps. This is one of the two or three that I consistently use and make progress with.

It works. Simple and good.

(though I wish I could change the colors; don't really like the black background, alas)

It would really be nice to have DROPBOX support!!
