CrewNerd for Rowing & Paddling User Reviews

Second to none!

I’ve used CrewNerd since 2009 or so. It just works, is always updated and simply gets better and better with age (unlike me, as ~14 years of app data shows…)

Response from developer

Wow, you were one of the very early users! Thank you for your support!

Feels really dated

Complicated interface, not a fun app to use

Response from developer

We always welcome feedback if there are particular things you found confusing. Much of the user interface is based on ideas from the Concept2 erg monitor and the NK SpeedCoach, which are very familiar products to most rowers.

Best rowing app ever!

Crew Nerd’s team of developers can be counted on to keep updating and improving the app as people use it. We have been using this app as a team of rowers for many years and are constantly impressed. Best money ever spent on an app. Keep track of your workouts and your boats, never use post-its or stroke coaches in the boat again! And you can upload to Strava too. Five stars.

Truly the best all around rowing app

I use this mostly to track my workouts for Strava as the Strava watch app is buggy as heck. The watch only mode works great!

Response from developer

Thank you! We're glad you're enjoying the app!

2 questions

Can i download data as a fit file?
Can you add a third data set to the graph? Stroke coach will show 500 meter pace, stroke rate, and heart rate on the same graph.

Very pleased with CrewNerd. Especially the heart rate measurements because connecting a polar heart rate monitor to a speed coach can be difficult. Thanks

Thank you for your questions! We don't currently support export to FIT files, but there are some online tools that can convert from TCX to FIT, and we also find that TCX files can often be used instead of FIT. If you're using an application or website that will only accept FIT, please contact us by email and we can look into that further. Regarding your second question, the third-party charting component that we use only supports two data sets, but Apple recently introduced their own charting framework that looks very interesting and should be a good replacement. I've added this to our future work list.

Very pleased

I have been using the app for over 4 years. It is easy to use. I especially like that you can change the screen to adjust for rowing in the dark or when there is light. I import the data into Apple Health for an Afib study I have been participating in for the past two years.

Not recommended

Good concept, poor implementation. The displayed data is all over the place, not at all accurate. Not recommended.

Can you tell us more about which data fields are problematic? If you email us at support@performancephones.com we'd be happy to help troubleshoot!

Great App!! Much better than Strava!

Works perfectly for kayaking, paddle boarding and rowing. Developer was extremely responsive, quickly making a fix that allows the app to run in the background while using other apps. Highly recommended!

Response from developer

Thank you for your help testing that new feature!

Fatal flaw

Nice app but unusable with any other app on your phone. If you need to answer an incoming call/text or check your position on a nav app or record a bird sound on Merlin the CrewNerd trip resets mileage to zero and stops recording. It then needs to be restarted but any mileage counted to that point is only saved in a separate “interval”, so total distance, average speed etc is lost. Would be a 5 star with that simple fix—which should be the default as with all other iPhone apps that run in the background unless specifically exited.

Stops working when phone locks

Can’t get the app to record a workout.

Response from developer

Please contact us at support@performancephones.com. I’m sure we can get that sorted out for you.
