Looking Good!

The review which says tracks cannot be read on the iPhone is simply wrong. I have both the OS paper map and a downloaded map for a particular area and they are identical in detail - in fact the iPhone Map is a great deal clearer to read in the shade - I concede there might be some difficulty in bright sunlight but the iPhone screen is very good in those circumstances. I alos have a Satmap 10 GPS device and wish Route Atlas had been released before I bought the Satmap since it is much more intuitive than the Satmap software - and the maps are much cheaper to licence since they are on a scale more suited to daily walking. The only question remaining has nothing to do with Routebuddy - it's the accuracy of the GPS in the iPhone. The jury's out on that.

Great app!

This app is awesome. It assumes you can actually read a map, however. So some may not like it for this reason!
I don't really see any reason to buy additional maps, but they could be fun. Maybe I'll buy one, but for now the included ones are more than enough!

Nice for viewing OpenStreetMap coverage when online

If you are a UK user, the only maps you can download for this app cost over £17 each and are OS 1:25k scale Explorer maps. That is a little over double the cost of a paper-map for the same region. As such it is a waste of time buying those maps through RouteBuddy. However, this app does allow you to view all the freely available online maps from the OpenStreetMap project (think of it as Wikipedia but for maps instead of encyclopaedia articles) provided you maintain an internet connection (rather like when using Google maps). You can't save the OpenStreetMap maps for offline viewing with this app (even though it is legal to do so as they are free from any copyright), but it is a good way of finding out just how good or bad the OpenStreetMap maps are for a given area. There are other apps (currently all paid for I believe) which do let you save those OpenStreetMap maps onto your iPhone/iTouch for offline viewing, but you would be wise to check first either on your computer or with an app like this just how many streets are missing from them for any area. Certain areas around my nearest major city in England are missing large numbers of streets, and some local areas have certain streets totally overlooked. For UK users, its only real worth is for browsing OpenStreetMaps online, unless you are willing to pay £17 for each OS Explorer map.

Useless

Useless App. I purchased the N. California Topo map from the developers website and wasted my money. Completely useless. Provides zero useful information for hiking or anything else for that matter. Gave it one star becuase I had to place some rating in order to post.

Better Description would avoid many of the single star reviews

If the developers were to fully disclose the fact that the included maps are for demonstration (unless you visit those areas), and that all other maps must be bought ($30-40 if I recall correctly). Also the downloadable maps also take up a tremendous amount of space, i.e. 500MB to 3GB! I know I downloaded this app thinking it was chalk full of maps, after reading the current descriptions. I did not pay attention to the file size of the app and so was disappointed. For those of you used to using a GPS handheld and downloading (and purchasing) maps for it, then this is for you. The app itself, from what I looked at, seemed easy to use, nicely put together, easy to access the maps, and stable( only used it for about 5 min). Did not test offline speed or any GPS abilities. Change the description for the sake of full disclosure, and I'd give it 3-4 stars.
