Originally based in the Tower of the Winds within the Vatican in Rome, the Vatican Observatory is now headquartered at the summer residence of the Pope and a nearby convent in Castel Gandolfo, Italy. Here, at one of the principal sites of the Vatican, a short distance from Vatican City, is one of the oldest research institutions in the world, a place where grandeur combines with faith and tradition to create a center of discovery. The Vatican Observatory Foundation was established to provide financial support for of the Vatican Observatory's mission of discovery: cutting-edge scientific research and education conducted by the Vatican Observatory and maintenance of the Vatican Observatory's state-of-the-art telescope facilities.
