Reviews of Backgammon NJ HD

  • It cheats and so it gets 1 star

Update from Jimmy response: After 76,000 rolls, the computer has better stats in every major category: avg per roll, frequency of doubles, getting out on 5 point board, etc. They spend a lot of time proving the game doesn't look ahead, but they don't deny the rolls are unbalanced (random and unbalanced are two different things). His "proofs" don't address the following: Pips/roll are 8.15 vs 8.17, doubles % are 16.5 vs 16.9, 5pt board are 29.3 vs 31.3, 4pt board is 55 vs 55.8, 3pt board are 74.6 vs 75.9, 2pt board are 88.1 vs 89.5, and 1pt board are 97.5 vs 97.6. The 5pt board statistic, this is nearly 3 standard deviations from the mean and therefore statistically improbable. Add to that stat that the computer leads me in every stat and in every case the computer beats the mean expected and I think it proves cheating.

Update: Up to 221k rolls and all the above holds true. Computer rolls have led human rolls in 1. Opening rolls 2. Entering from the bar in a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 point bar. I don’t know the statistical odds of this, but it seems improbable after 9000 matches. Seems to me the rolls would even out over time, but it doesn’t happen.

    Developer Response

    1) The app is honest & has random rolls. Proofs here: http://www.njsoftware.com/note.html The proofs address everything necessary to prove the rolls are random, but you CONVENIENTLY CHOOSE NOT TO understand them. This is the most important point which supersedes all others: If you don't think the app is honest, then you need to go through the proofs step-by-step as detailed and disprove them. The rest below is just incidental. 2) The reason you think that every backgammon game cheats is because they actually DON'T cheat. But you'll never get over that feeling unless you take the effort to actually go through and understand the proofs we've provided that show our app is honest. The proofs are detailed step-by-step for you to follow. 3) Let's take a look at one stat that we can examine easily, the number of doubles: For 76,000 rolls, the standard deviation is .00135. This means: There is a 68% chance that the percent of doubles will be between 16.53% and 16.80% (1 sigma) There is a 95% chance that the percent of doubles will be between 16.40% and 16.94% (2 sigma) Your stats are within the 2 sigma results. For 1,000,000 rolls, the standard deviation is .00037. This means: There is a 68% chance that the percent of doubles will be between 16.63% and 16.70% (1 sigma) There is a 95% chance that the percent of doubles will be between 16.59% and 16.74% (2 sigma) It takes a large sample size to decrease the variance to the point that you're expecting. Expecting your stats to be exactly equal is unrealistic. Random means just that, random. Anything can and will happen. Even with a large sample size, there is still a 5% chance that stats will be 3 sigma outliers and fall outside the 95% confidence range. The only way for the stats to be exactly equal would be to have non-random rolls. Is that what you really want? 4) Regardless, being ahead in stats by a small amount won't help you win more. To do that, you must learn to *make better moves*. Only then will your playing skill improve. Use the tools in the app (Hints, Match Info) to help you improve. Post match positions to the BGonline forum (http://bgonline.org/forums) and ask the experts there to help explain why one move is better than another. There are numerous other backgammon apps out there, many of which are much easier to beat. If you use those apps instead, you'll be happier.
  • Best BG on App Store

Hands-down the number one backgammon app.

Unless Snowie, GNU or Jellyfish release their app, you’re not going to find a stronger game to help you improve.

Disregard all of the people leaving comments about the computer cheating. Those people truly don’t understand the randomness of dice.

Years ago when I first purchased, I was in that same boat. However, more than once I have turned on manual rolls and rolled my own dice and you know what? Crazy things also happen. Just this morning I played with Manuel dice and rolled four double sixes in a row. Had this happened on the random generator in the game, most people would’ve thought the game is terrible and on and on.

To avoid future trashing of this app from all of those people, do what I did. Roll your own dice and see what happens. I guarantee you’ll always hit some crazy rolls or the computer will have what appears to be the perfect rolls. Guess what though? It happens. Play it long enough and roll your own dice and you will see all of these crazy things you people complain about time and time again.

    Developer Response

We're happy you're enjoying the app! Thanks for being a voice of reason. =)
  • Game cheats if dice in auto roll

I read the comment by AirPrint Shmairprint (from 3 yrs ago), who tested his skill using manual rolling, and he did great, whereas in expert mode he lost every game. That gave me an idea. I was doing well, just playing against the computer, until I opted for Auto Roll dice, then I was losing 6/7 games or worse, and I’m no beginner. So I changed back to not auto rolling the dice, and first new game I got backgammon, proving auto rolling dice was the problem.

The reason I was willing to pay for this game, the Pro version, was the developer’s insistence that dice rolls weren’t biased; but with Auto Roll, opponent got more doubles when most needed, especially when bearing off. Of course, statistics show doubles average to be about same for both sides, but timing is critical. So DO NOT USE AUTO ROLL and you should really enjoy this game! Clearly the developer didn’t test every possible scenario or he would have fixed the Greedy Component Syndrome. Unfortunately, last update was 2 years ago so doubt he will even read this comment. I’ve no comment about playing online, as I’ve not tried it yet. But for me, this game is a keeper.
