  • Got Worse

This App is pretty good but the interface has gotten worse with version 3.56.541. The buttons (Favorites, Flashcards, etc.) are not as clear and well defined. I'm not sure if Langenscheidt is trying to make the app more "sleek" or if it has to do with the launch of iOS 8, but the buttons are more faded and harder to distinguish.

Therefore I'm taking 1 star away from my prior 4-star rating.

…I'd rather Langenscheidt put its efforts into more vocabulary and functionality than changing an already good interface.

  • New version SLOW. Poor pronunciation help

I am a German student at the C1 level (intermediate). There are plenty of words in articles and exercises that are not covered in this dictionary, but the vast majority are (That's good!). Pronunciation is disappointing -- there is no written pronunciation unless there is also a voice pronunciation and the voice pronunciation doesn't cover a LOT of words.

The thing I most dislike is the S L O W N E S S of the underlying software. Tap a word and there is a long wait. This didn't used to be the case on earlier versions on earlier iPhones. It seems that the problem is getting worse. If you look up a word occasionally then this is not such a problem. But if you are a serious learner and you look up dozens of words, day after day, then this dictionary is awful.

In sum, I like the basic dictionary a lot -- I have been a fan of Langenscheidt for decades. But they have fumbled the software part of it, and for utterly inexplicable reasons they put only half the pronunciations in.

  • Need more from a $70 app

I think this app wonderfully serves its primary purpose. It is a powerful 2-way dictionary app with offline accessibility and an essential "talking" feature. However, for a $70 app I still think it lacks conviction. The app seems to forget other features/inclusions, perhaps in the lines of a dedicated German grammar section or an in-built translator. These are my personal suggestions, but it is certainly lacking a few ingredients that would justify its hefty price tag.

  • Best German dictionary!

I bought 4 cheaper dictionaries and wasn't pleased, so went ahead and spent the money and am totally satisfied. It's a professional dictionary. Has everything the cheaper dictionaries don't. All irregular forms, genders, many example sentences, and pronunciations of many words. By far the best dictionary app on the market and well worth the $65.

Update: the best dictionary just got better! Now copy any German word in any program and when you open the dictionary it opens straight to the word!

  • Not fair

This is only for people who want to learn english and their mother language is German. No german verb conjugation. I am very disappointed with my purchase.
  • This is probably this biggest money grab

This is probably my biggest money money wasting I have done so far on Apple store. The English part is good. The German part of dictionary is hut and miss, some words are complete with expressions but some common words don't even show any variations, uses or idioms. On top of that - the worst issue - when you cycle switch between this and another app, the dictionary goes back to search window. So you need to go through history again to access the last word. Very annoying. There is no way to turn off and on this behavior. I'm going to ask money back for this app because this is really annoying. And I guess that's the case with all Langenscheidt dictionaries.

  • Extremely disappointed with Langenscheidt. No pronunciation symbols?

Most striking of all there are no text pronunciation symbols for German words. How is that possible when even Lagenscheidt's little yellow pocket dictionaries have this feature??

Additionally, there are no verb conjugations for German verbs.

This app is clearly geared toward German speakers: the English portion does offer both features, while the German portion doesn't.

I feel somewhat disatisfied with this app given the hefty pricetag I paid. Although the talking aspect is useful, only certain words will have audio proununciations and this makes pronunciation symbols all the more vital.

Ultimately I'm left feeling cheated (not a great feeling). I think this product will be useful for Germans learning English, but of dubious value for individuals learning German given the lack of pronunciation symbols and a German morphology module.

  • Extensive dictionary, but aimed at German speakers learning English

If I had read description of this app carefully enough, I would have noticed that German isn't one of the languages that supports word lookup using a conjugated form of the word. For example, if I enter erwarb, it shows erwärmen as the suggested entry. However it should show erwerben. Given that German often conjugates verbs beyond recognition, this is a major short coming. By contrast, Langenscheidt's excellent e-Dictionaries PC application handles this scenario effortlessly. Also Langenscheidt's dictionary on the Franklin system handles this too. So one star loss for this. In the screenshots for the app, there is one showing all the word forms for an English word. I assumed that it would do the same for German verbs - but it doesn't. Another star loss for this. I was almost surprised that the dictionary will actually speak many of the German words - not just the English ones. This is an advance on many other electronic German English dictionaries which only speak the English words. Another example where this dictionary favours German speakers - English words are broken up so you can see the syllables - but not for German words. Other than that this dictionary is fast and easy to use, seems to have a lot of words, and it is very quick to see words you have looked up recently.
