Reviews of Daily Mail

  • App Disappoints

I am constantly irritated by the online version of Daily Mail because it regularly forces updates and causes me to lose my location. I have to start over and find where I was reading. SO VERY ANNOYING! And no way to stop involuntary refresh from occurring. Additionally that stupid pop up that slides over the screen from the right side requiring me to clear it. Yes, I “GOT IT” over and over and over again. Here’s a hint: Display it just once and never again.

I decided to try the app, and boy oh boy what a mistake that was. Primarily, ads are everywhere with no way (that I can find) to block them. I can block them when I navigate to the site with a shortcut. I understand ads, but golly, enough is sometimes too much.

So I decided that the lessor of the two evils is hitting the website direct and tolerating:

    1. Auto refresh, auto refresh, auto refresh, and more auto refresh so I lose my location, lose my location, well you get it!
    2. That incredibly annoying “GOT IT?” Slider that obscures the article on a recurring basis. And by the way:
    3. The increasingly numerous and more and more vulgar articles about sexual topics that aren’t news…really!

The bottom line is that I am weaning myself from Daily Mail. And the truth is that it is becoming easier every day.
  • Crumbling internally…

The Daily Mail is not what it used to be, and this app reflects it probably greater than anything else. They're contributing to the decimation of print media, and a prime example is how they do ads. Happen to wake up earlier than the person sleeping next to you, or go to bed later? You can’t read the news here. Why? They choose to have VIDEO ADS that blast at whatever volume your phone is set at. To “read” an article, you now must be certain that your volume is down completely. Want to listen to a podcast and skim? Can’t do that either for the reason listed as to why you can’t do any late night or early morning reading. Want to scan through pictures? You can look at three to five without having a 5 to 30 second VIDEO ad in a site that people go to in order to READ articles. In the end companies like this will wish they had listened to their customers.
  • This is 80% ads, with bits of poorly edited copy in between

New Review: these lunatics will randomly play loud music or sounds even if your phone is on silent mode. You can’t check this app for news in a library, in court, or anywhere where loud banjo or fiber commercials are unwelcome. There is no way to stop the sound in settings. You can control the volume on your phone but the music can’t be turned off. It feels very invasive and creepy.

1st Review: I stopped reading online and switched to the App (which DM pushed readers to do) because the online site was perpetually susceptible to bugs and page detour traps. The App loads easily, but the Ads are out of hand. The upper and lower ads cover 80 percent on my phone viewing screen. This obscures the articles to the point you can’t read the stories and goodness help you trying to find a way to click back or if you accidentally touch one of these ads trying to escape. The paper’s editing and proofing has been poor since they developed the app, but the ads are the final straw. Get your act together, DM. You get the news so quickly but you screw up the easy part of the reporting. I would pay to remove the ads but then I’d be really mad if you didn’t start trying harder to be s better quality product.
