Description of Red Koto

RedKoto is a growing collection of currently 70 tunings by Koto Virtuoso Chieko Mori. Red Koto can be used for tuning the Instrument by ear, for studying scales, or for playing with the different tunings. These are the tunings for her compositions and for learning Koto Music at "Koto Studio" in Tokyo. The Score of each composition is available separately on demand. Sounds are played both picked with the left hand and plucked with the right hand using ivory picks.  The middle of the screen represents the 13 strings of the Koto, each string plays a plucked sound at the corresponding pitch. To the right of the string the note is shown, touching each note produces a picked sound. The order of the tunings can be re-arranged by long-pressing on a tuning in the list. Except where noted differently, tunings are based on a root note of 442 Hertz.

Reviews of Red Koto

Terrible

I want my money back. It has cheap sound and the most basic features. Horrible layout, not worth 8 dollars!!!!

Hira-joshi tuning missing...

... This is a large oversight. Also the option to create tunings would be an excellent feature. $7.99 without these features demands a partial refund -or- an update that includes them.

Response from developer

Hi, Please understand that this App is about tunings by Chieko Mori. For traditional tunings for the Koto please see the KotoTunings App. Thank You!

Red Koto

Following on Koto Tunings this app presents another series of tunings for the Koto by master performer Chieko Mori. Red Koto offers tonal combinations that are more adventurous and modern, further away for the Japanese tradition. They are based on Chieko's own tunings, those she uses in her often improvised pieces. The quality of the samples is excellent, but these are a lot more challenging than the traditional ones, especially if combined with instruments tuned in classical western style.
Very interesting and stimulating both for people interested in learning the instrument and those who want to include these beautiful sounds and tonal ranges in electronic music compositions, loops and digital productions.
