Japanese materials readable overseas, what a concept

Straightforward enough to use, the prices are good, and it’s region-free! I picked up a copy of Tyûôkôron and read without issue.

Too many restrictions

I had originally rated this with 5 stars, but after using it for an entire novel, I’ve changed my mind. If you already are fluent in Japanese, this app is fine. But if you are trying to learn the language, this app has problems. (1.) There is a limit to how much you can copy to paste into a decent translator or into an Ai for a grammar lesson. This makes *some* sense for text that is not public domain. (2.) There is no way to download a book from Kinoppy to put into a decent ebook reader such as “Yomu”.

For manga lovers, Kinoppy is a joy. There is a huge selection of free-to-try titles. I prefer reading Akutagawa and Ranpo, though, so Manga doesn’t excite me.

Lately I’ve been using Kinoppy for discovery of titles, then, instead of making a purchase in the app, I switch to Amazon Japan, buy the title there, download the book file, and read it with “Yomu” where I can copy/paste without limits in order to study the language.

Students of Japanese obviously are not in the target audience for Kinokuniya!

Great for learning Japanese

I bought my first book through the in-app store a month or so ago and I’m using the built-in reader. Some observations: A long press on a word brings up the iOS dictionary, but not the translator. If I have trouble with an idiom or grammar, I copy the puzzling passage and paste it into Google Translate or OpenAI. The format of the e-book is EPUB. I have not tried isolating the file for use in other apps. There is a “memo” option where I write the English meaning of new words; this option appears with the same long press that shows the “Dictionary” option. There is no method to export your memos for further study. I found that if I’m going to use the “Memo” feature for vocabulary study, I might as well paste my notes into a flashcard app (e.g. Flashcards Deluxe).

Anyway. . . I’m reading オリエント急行を追え and am quite enjoying it. I think other students of the language will, also, find this app useful. I can find books here that are not available elsewhere and the prices are reasonable. I can purchase through Apple Pay and let it worry about the $US/Yen conversion.

I have a paperback version of オリエント急行を追え, but the print is so tiny, I need magnifying lenses to read it. This app, of course, lets me use large font sizes. And furigana displays perfectly!

If developers figure out how to make the “Memo” feature exportable to study sheets or flashcards, this becomes a 6-star app!

Cannot use with screen reader

I like this app which provides the access to many interesting books from japan. But it cannot use with the build in screen reader. It is a little hard for me to read the content when not being able to listen to the texts. Also it lack the convenience of hand free.

ほとんどの本が国内限定

Thanks for giving me access to Japanese books!

海外で使えても読める本なさすぎ

ほとんど国内会員限定。アプリの意味なし。ふざけてるよね。
