  • Good app, does what it says on the tin

A few points to clear up...

    1) ok, it says free, and then you have to buy a language pack. However, It does say in the description that its a sample. If they didn't let you download the app free, you wouldn't be able to test it before you decide to buy a language pack.

    2) you CAN test the app before you buy if you select the American voice and use the sample texts provided. I was a bit annoyed that I couldn't sample the English voice, but it is an American app so fair enough I guess....

    3) it costs $4.99 for a language pack, which is £2.99. Not £4.99.

I purchased this app mainly to read PDF files while i'm studying for university. I find it reads quite coherently, enabling me to follow the text even when I'm not looking at the screen. Just what I wanted :)

  • Pretty good application for the price...

This is a pretty good application for the price. Okay, it does persist in producing some interesting renderings; and for a Scotsman the English UK voice I find difficult to take seriously. For the iPad user such as myself, I have to adjust the sleep settings so that the flow won't be cutting out every two minutes. However, so far I've run up about 15 hours of reading (using the American voice) and I'm happy with the application and look forward to future improvements.

  • Pros & Cons

Do find this app useful, It is something I have been looking for to aid my life.

    Pros:
1.able to pick a speed on speech is great, it's a time saver for someone needs to read through a pdf file fast.
    2. it boxes up the word that is reading helps to keep up and know where it is left of on your hard copy.
    3. a version comes in female and male voice is a plus.

    Cons:
    1. it's slow to respond. it might be my iPhone is packed with multiple things. Slow to respond means it doesn't respond to your command right away... almost feels like it's going to freeze on you ( it didn't so far, but it's annoying when I want it to stop and it's still going)
    2. because of slower respond, i don't even bother to enlarge my page to a readable size on the phone
    3. this only works for pdf files, so it's only whatever you have in pdf. it only reads pdf. It won't read your email that you want to send out or other stuff like in other apps that provide.

    Over all:
I still like it, since it does what I originally wanted which is finding an app to read my pdf files for me. But definitely feel a bit cheated with the $4.99 when I compare to other apps that what they can do for lesser price. But like I said, it serves what i needed... therefore I didn't buy other cheap one to try out ... thinking cheap ones I might find just as much flaws :)

  • Best text to speach app out there

I have dyslexia, and I am study for my MBA. Most of my course books are now provided as PDF files, this is the first app that will read the book as it is and not try to convert it to a page of unformatted text. I can therefore use the models, charts and table as the text is read to me. I have had a few issues with some words, but the support has been excellent and they have gone out of their way to ensure all the books make sense, word wise anyway; I have to get my head round the models!

  • Useful

Tried this for listening to Open University pdfs while driving or in the gym. Of all the text to speech readers available, ive found this to be the most useable for this purpose hence ive given it 4 out of 5. Have found it works decently with large areas of text, but will agonisingly work its way through tables rather than skip them. Its most annoying features are that it will not pronounce the letter 'f' alongside other consonants, and often spells out 'the' as T, H, E.

However, balancing these against its ability to read very long documents - with only the occasional freeze- with quite bearable clarity, its worth it for the gain in study time.

  • Clunky and Deceptive

Complaint wine before you can use this you have to spend five dollars to purchase a voice. That should be made very clear before you start this program.

The English voice is relatively good as far as smoothness goes... but it has a hard time reading many common words. For instance "what" was read as "w h at". How do you possibly messed up something that simple?

The program is clunky and moves very slowly when I tried to scroll from page to page. And I'm having quite a difficult time getting the cursor to move to any particular point of my choosing.

If you don't mind the hidden cost and if you only want to read a document from start to finish without choosing a starting point your self and if you don't mind these strange pronunciations then this may be okay.

Unless these problems are addressed I cannot recommend this app. BTW, I am using it on iPad 3.

  • Disappointing

Reads every page heading, page number and fails to basic pronunciation .. but worst of all, after purchasing the language some months ago, it prompted a repurchase. So it seems like the language pack has a time limit? So this is either a fault in the app or seriously expensive!
  • Excellent

One of the excellent apps in the market. Very useful, user friendly and cost effective. Very good customer support. Some pronunciations need correction. Please allow background reading.
  • Not far off

I found this app better than "voice reader". But to get it running, I had to pay close to $11 AUD. the downfall for me is it reads headers and footers on every page, before the page content (also page numbers but thats fair enough). it won't read when the iPad locks and you can't pick a new starting point, it'll read from the top if any page. The header footer thing is a real issue, as I don't want web addresses or chapter titles recited to me every page. The locked-voice off is a problem because I can't hear this when I drive which is what I really wanted

  • Do Not Buy

It does not work after paying for the language download. There is no sound at all. This is a scam... it shouldn't be allowed on the App Store.
