Reviews of FBI Workout with Stew Smith

  • Overtraining and Stress Fracture

I am previously a NSCA certified personal trainer, and experienced overtraining, pulled hamstrings, and a “severe stress fracture” in the ‘ring finger’ toe of my right foot.

After just two weeks of trying to follow the plan, I knew it was at a starting point that most people wouldn’t be able to accomplish without negative impact. Despite pain, which I attributed to my body acclimating to the intense training, I continued to train. I even scaled back some of the workouts. I changed my 1.5 pace to the point equivalent of earning a zero instead of a one… and still I ended up with a stress fracture. Today is my first day back to be allowed to jog after 9 weeks in a boot and on a knee scooter. I’ve been in PT for 3 weeks now. That’s 12 weeks since I last was running regularly.

If you wish to have setbacks, download the app, and follow it to the ‘T’… and don’t bother emailing Stew. I tried twice and he didn’t respond.
  • Not for beginners

This app requires you to be very fit from the start.

If you’re like me and require a bit more beginner friendly training, this app is not for you.
  • Beware: No Place to Start

All 4-5 star reviews smells fishy because it is.

I’ve prepared for multiple fitness tests in my career and have a basic understanding of how fitness works—I’m in decent shape. I read the FBI guide to training for the PFT carefully, but after trying to craft a workout schedule on what they suggest, I figured I could spend ten dollars for someone to detail out a training regimen.

Mistake. The workouts provided are not sustainable and will lead to injuries if you’re not already at an incredibly high level of fitness. I don’t know who needs this. Anyone who can keep up with such a regimen will already be prepared for the test—and kudos! In that case, this app is great for maintaining that level of fitness! Hence the three stars.

But if you’re looking for something to help you build up to passing, this isn’t it. Follow the FBI’s free manual. It might take more work to create a regimen, but it is sustainable for the long term. You have a year after Phase II to complete the PFT. Don’t try to kill yourself with this program. It will lead to discouragement and injury. Progress takes time.
