  • So Close to 5 Stars.

I am overjoyed that a high-quality isomorphic keyboard app exists in the iOS ecosystem. Musix is responsive, well-designed, and thoroughly usable as a serious musical instrument given its fantastic support for MIDI, OSC, and AudioBus.

In my opinion, this app is 3 minor changes away from perfection:

    - Please let me disable the "slide" between notes! The iPad touchscreen is great, but it is far too easy to mistakenly hit a second key after beginning a touch event. I don't slide between keys on a piano, I don't really ever want to do that here either!

    - Musix needs a blank coloring. Blank white keys are my favorite way to play on isomorphic keyboard layouts. The rainbow coloring is distracting, and the major scale colorings are constraining for musical thought.

    - I want to turn the lettering off. All that text is just unnecessary and distracting to me as I don't really think in terms of lettered notes.

Thank you so much to shiverware for making such a phenomenal tool! I recommend it to everybody who will listen.

Thanks for the great feedback. Text can be turned off from the #b menu. Choose Text -> None. You can turn most colors off (other than tonic) by choosing Mode -> Chromatic and Note Pattern -> Default. As for fully disabling slide/colors, we may add this to our feature list. Seems like a solid suggestion.
  • To many issues

The app keeps freezing and it doesn’t show how to change instruments

    Developer Response

Hi Navi, Can you email support@shiverware.com so we can help? We need some information (such as device, etc) to gain insight into why you are seeing "freezing". To change instruments, just tap on the Guitar Icon, then Tap on the blue text under Internal (which shows your current setting). Also, make sure that the Internal switch is turned on.
  • great app, easy to use

makes it easy to lay down some bass or keys that sound great. support is quick and responsive too. thanks again, looking forward to future updates.
  • The Innovation string players have been waiting for.

The boards are laid out in a way that makes them fun and surprisingly ez to play. It just all seems to click together really well to make an outstanding instrument. I far prefer this to traditional linear keyboards. I know I’m not the only string player who understands the concept of a linear keyboard but doesn’t enjoy rocking one because something doesn’t mesh. Personally I think in terms of circles musically and this app gives me the extra dimensional aspect to provide me with circles to look at. This app makes my iPad feel less like a sequencer and more like a traditional instrument. It’s I pretty neat controller that way, but the real power behind this app is that it is literally a sort of archetype or template for every song you could ever want to write. This is hands down the writers most powerful tool, even if you’re a writer that has your theory memorized or well understood there is certainly going to be an idea that this app can help you inspire to write. This isn’t the one to be cheap about 10 bucks on. This app is very innovative and should be funded along to enrich our musical / technical foundation in this growing industry/ hobby market. If you mad it doesn’t have its own sounds, don’t be, this isn’t that sort of design. Sounds are dime a dozen. This is a whole new keyboard concept where your finger shape positioning never needs to change to create new chords, this makes arpeggiating and chord progression a cake walk to navigate thru manually even at faster tempos rt on your iPad screen. It’s awesome ¡ These devs are fast at responding if you need even the stupidest help like I did too. I’m really excited about this app and that’s why I’m giving the best review I can. Im hoping to see continued development over the course of my lifetime on this one... DONT OUTDATE MY KEYBOARD PLZ !!!!!!!

  • Essential for Linnstrument Owners

This fantastic app is the reason I got an iPad Pro and might be one of the most impactful musical tools I've encountered in my life. As an owner of a Linnstrument, I wanted to have as much practice time as possible on an isomorphic grid, but the Linnstrument can't go everywhere I go. This app *greatly* accelerated my skills playing on a grid and has transformed my understanding of music theory. As I spend more time with it I realize how much of a window into isomorphic or hexagonal layouts it is -- anyone else using this app: Do yourself a favor while you're learning, and switch between 1) layouts, 2) scales, 3) button sizes, and 3) labellings every now and then, even if you're working towards other goals. Doing this really opens up the possibilities but also constantly keeps you at the "edge" of where your learning is at, which helps you get better faster. Going back to a Linnstrument after playing on this app is an amusing sensation, as playing on a glass surfaced iPad requires a lot more mental agility so when you return to the Linnstrument you feel like an ultra-precise master. Great app :)

Thanks your thoughts. We are very happy that you are squeezing all the isomorphicism out of the app!
  • Great for learning

Great for learning music theory and bridging the gap between how something sounds and how it works according theory. Highly recommend it to visual thinkers. Really fun for improv as well.

I would like to see an option to put a subtle outline around the octaves, I think it would help me to relate it to playing piano a little more easily.

I'm glad you are seeing the advantage of using Musix Pro. Thanks for the octave marking suggestion. There is an option to "Show Parallelogram" in the systems many (sharp/flat/natural icon). It shows all the notes within one octave to give you an idea of the octave shape, but I do like the idea of a more "playable" separation of octaves. I will add it to our future ideas list.
  • An ergonomic revolution!

Having not so large hands, I have always struggled with the reaches involved in playing the piano keyboard, and have always wondered if there was a better way to lay out the keys. This app really opened my eyes to the possibilities of the isomorphic layout, especially the Gerhard layout. The efficiency in space reduction is significant, as I am able to access 4 chromatic octaves’ worth of hexagonal keys on an iPad Pro 12.9”. I do realize that some of these layouts have existed before on concertinas and button accordions, but this app gives you a lot more options. It also allows you to turn the iPad into both controller and sound producer - one neat little package you can take anywhere!

A few things I would suggest to make this app even more awesome would be to mirror-image the screen, because many layouts favor one hand or the other, in terms of performance proficiency. Velocity control could help with expressive performances. A pitch bend bar option would also aid that. As a person who likes tactile feedback, making Musix Pro able to control the layout of a hardware button controller would make it indispensable. That being said, this app is a fundamentally important tool in the evolution of musical instrument design. Thank you, Shiverware!

Thanks for the kind words JDRock. We are working on the ability to have two different layouts on the screen just for the reasons we describe. Hopefully some of the new chording features, quick layout changes, and octave changes have improved your experience as well as we try to find time for all the other improvements we have planned.
  • Great!

Simple customisable layout, easy to remember patterns for scales & chords.
Really like how you can move the range of notes up and down using the corner controls.
Changing the size of the keys is also an excellent feature to enable it to be set up for individual playing styles.
No problems with getting the midi out to control other apps
