Stability & functionality have kept declining

I’ve used VSCO for years and over the last 1-2 years I’ve noticed tons of bugs and compatibility issues which don’t seem to ever get fixed. Seems they’ve prioritised being a social media app and pivoted resources there vs. being a stable photo editing app. Adding photos from iOS Photos is a horrible experience since scrolling often selects more items erroneously. Opening a photo requires each item to be loaded. When I selected a bunch of photos from my “drafts” (again it’s not a draft there’s no “final” version) to export them, the export feature breaks after a couple photos and only 3 would export out of 50. Then I managed to export my entire library and it saved all without time & location data. Then I saved it via using the Share tool and clicking save images to Photos. Every time you edit a photo and return to the library in VSCO you have to confirm you would like to “save changes”. Again not sure why else anyone else is using this app so maybe stop bothering us with so many prompts and confirmations and just remove all this unnecessary hurdle and stabilise the app.

Poor update

Repetitive ads make me want to stop using this app

Good app, but I have one issue.

Great mobile photo editing app, I’m happy with all the available presets and features, so no complaints with the app at its core.

However, the amount of in-app notifications is an issue for me. Every time I open VSCO I am bombarded with suggestions for presets, pro-features, etc. I know these notifications are intended to be helpful and can be simply dismissed, but it’s quite annoying that I’m greeted by them every time open the app or navigate to a different section of the app. I understand that notifications can be turned off outside of VSCO, but there needs to be an option in the in-app settings to turn off in-app notifications.

For this reason, I can only give 4 stars, but if improvements are made I’d be glad to give the full 5.

It used to be good and reliable way back when

Back in 2017, I changed to iOS mainly because this app was better on iOS. It was reliable, no matter the picture format you were editing on. If there were bugs, I never experienced them. The core functionality was great, enabling me to jump in and just edit, quickly switching between options for each photo, and different photos, copying over edits I liked etc.

But lately, even as a subscriber, it’s been tough. Performance is so poor, no matter the device. Raw editing on the app is for the brave. Every time you try to copy edits on full preview, it blanks the edit after copying edits and throws you back to the gallery view. If you have multiple raw photos in your gallery, forget about editing anything quickly. There was a period with aggressive ads for the pro version (glad that’s slowed down now). To be honest, I don’t know who’s trying to use the clean up tool thing in preview (if you lot at VSCO have contrary telemetry, it’s noise).

Long story short, I am currently looking for another app that does what VSCO did when I gladly switched to a different platform for it, way back when user experience was a priority.

App crashing, won’t recognize my paid account, support page not working

The app has been crashing as soon as I open it for about a week now. I’ve done all recent updates and nothing works. I submitted a ticket through the Apple Store, and nothing. I tried deleting the app and reinstalling, and now it won’t even recognize my email address. It just keeps trying to get me to sign up again. I tried submitting a request for support via my computer and as soon as I hit submit, I get an error page. This is beyond frustrating, since it’s a paid app. Can someone please resolve this? Thanks!

Update: STILL NOTHING. I have submitted a second support ticket per the response below, 5 days ago, and crickets. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE FIX THIS OR GIVE ME A REFUND??

Update 2: I’ve officially canceled my subscription, as it’s been nothing but crickets from VSCO, aside from the response to this review, which is clearly just optics for them because they haven’t done a single thing to help me since I emailed support (more than once). Today, I searched Reddit to see who else is having these same issues, and found a post from 2 days ago from the CEO of VSCO, Eric Wittman. He says he is aware of issues but they are still working through issues, and to DM him directly on Reddit so he can better understand what’s going on. So I sent him a message. At this point, I’ll be shocked if anything gets resolved, but worth trying since I’ve…[checks notes]…ALREADY PAID FOR THE APP.

This app is completely broken now. Don’t pay for it!

Can the devs please do something to fix this app? It’s been 2 years now, same glitches, crashes, import issues, export issues, frame rate (drop frame) issues, FX issues, gamma shift on export, and numerous other faults without any resolution. It’s extremely disappointing since it used to be so reliable, now it struggles with the most basic things (and the app itself is the most basic of video/photo editors in the first place).

I have to fiddle around and try over and over again 50 odd times before I get something even remotely useful on export, and all meanwhile I’m being bombarded by “GET THE PRO MEMBERSHIP” ads left right and centre (I’ve already paid!!). It’s infuriating. How can you charge £40 a year for a non functional app? Where’s my refund? Sick of it.

What a shambles. Someone needs to just emulate the filters and make a better version of this garbage app. It’s absolutely atrocious. Won’t be renewing my membership, good riddance.

Used to be great

Years ago I used VSCO daily for my editing needs. It used to be the most streamlined, user-friendly app and like so many other things got ruined by superfluous updates that belabor the editing process and just make using it an unpleasant experience. You used to be able to upload a ton of photos in order; now they upload out of order. You used to be able swipe between photos in the gallery in the photo editor, now you have to exit the photo editor and manually select the photo, which may require scrolling all the way back to find your place if you’re editing a large batch. Getting to the photo editor and presets is no longer a quick one button command. Neither is saving a photo, there’s about four steps to do that now, and then you are asked if you want to save your edits within the app (that should be a given?!). There are a million categories for presets so it’s a constant scroll to get where you need to be, which for me is usually “favorites” or “recents”. The app is buggy and photos disappear. I could go on and on. The editing tools are fine, the presets are great, but the app is absolute garbage and you can’t convince me the people doing the updates are actually using it themselves because if so they’d be banging their heads against a wall. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke, VSCO. Oh, and it used to be free!

It isn’t what it used to be

I’ve used this app a lot in the past, I started using it again but its so laggy and full of bugs that makes it impossible to use and enjoy, I’m glad I only paid the pro membership for a month.

Please just make this more stable

I’ve used VSCO for going on about 10 years. I really love it. But oh my god for the better part of 1.5 years it’s been so unstable; I still use it cause I really like the raw editing / video filters. I forgave you for the quite frankly greedy pro subscription but I’m writing this review as I now can’t even import photos. I would contact support but there a different issue each time; my videos can’t render, the import screen won’t load my photos, it crashes when I pick a photo, etc. the only way I’m loading it now is going “photo-> import to VSCO” and it still crashes. It’s so annoying. Fix your stuff and make it stable before trying to charge people so much extra for pro :/

An embarrassment to its creator

Asking users to pay upwards of $50 for basic editing tools is a JOKE. As someone who was once a member for 2 years, $20 was pushing it, half of your features are already embedded in the iphones basic editing capabilities. I used to use this app RELIGIOUSLY and had done since it’s release but this has become comical. Every new day I open your bug-ridden app I come to find YET ANOTHER feature stripped away and locked behind your ridiculous subscription fee. Your company’s desperation for money is nothing short of deplorable and you’ve reduced yourselves and your owner to nothing but a pen of greedy swine 🐖🐖🐖🐖🐖. Creator, owner and photographer Joel Flory has strived to make photo editing as inaccessible and undesirable as he humanly could’ve and is an embarrassment to the industry. I would no longer recommend this app to anyone and encourage users to turn literally elsewhere. 🚮🤮🤢 Kind regards.
