Description of iNSIGHT Color Mixing

This is a demonstration of additive and subtractive color mixing, or the mixing of colored lights and colored pigments. With colored lights, red, green, and blue primaries are used, while with colored pigments, cyan, magenta, and yellow primaries are simulated. The proportion of the primary colors in a color mixture can be adjusted, and the position of a given color mixture can be plotted in a 3D color space. iNSIGHT is a curriculum supplement for experimental psychology, sensation and perception, vision science, and optometry lab classes. There are two different types of iNSIGHT apps: experiments and interactive demonstrations. Experiments are real psychophysical procedures (NOT simulations) that generate real data. Demonstrations illustrate a visual phenomenon and allow students to manipulate the effect. Each lab is complete with a quick-start guide, detailed instructions, background information, and one or more guided exercises. A printable PDF Student Guide that contains the exercises and other supporting materials, and a Teacher Guide are available at www.polyhedronlearning.com/see_apps_insight.html

  • Great

Great it shows the additive and the subtractive Colors well. Perfect fo demonstrated the property of RGB and CMYK. I was looking a app that didn’t have the Red Blue Yellow color wheel.
  • Cathy

GREEN IS NOT A PRIMARY COLOR! As is, the app is useless. Fix the problem, and it's exactly what I was looking for.

    Developer Response

As you correctly point out, green is NOT a primary color when doing SUBTRACTIVE color mixing, i.e., the mixing of pigments. However, green IS a primary color when doing ADDITIVE color mixing, i.e., the mixing of light. That's why your computer display is made up of lots of tiny red, green, and blue (RGB) pixels. This app demonstrates both types of color mixing.
  • Waste of time

No instructions on how to use. I punched the instructions tab over and over and got nothing. Useless if you can't figure out how to use it.

    Developer Response

    That bug has been fixed.
